Meet Spawk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spawk.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was a kid when my family would get letters from my uncle in prison, my parents would read the letters and give me the envelopes because he would draw cool shit on them for me. I was really intrigued with the cars, women, and lettering he would put on these envelopes. I believe it was where my passion for lettering began. I started to do graffiti while I was in Jr. high and by the time I left high school I was a part of the coolest group I have ever been friends with, The Graffaholeks. Flash forward a few years and without boring you with details I became a vandal for the love of letters then had my two beautiful kids and decided to really dig in to the art of lettering. I studied everything from typography to hand lettering and have now traveled the world because of the amazing people I have met thru the art of lettering. I have been a full-time sign painter since 2014 and never want to go back to working for anyone again. The end. Buahahaha ps. I don’t know how to do these interviews.

Please tell us about your art.
I like to consider myself a sign painter and designer, what people may call me is up to them but I create letter styles and build and hand paint signs for small businesses anywhere I am commissioned to. I do it because I have a weird love for the art of lettering. For years signage has been overlooked due to the fact that anyone can buy a computer and print some corny shit out but I want to change all of that, I want you to walk past one of my signs and stop, I want to make you question why it stands out and looks so cool. I want more people to take pride in things that are hand crafted and stop overlooking the cool shit that exists out there, there is something to be said about a well-crafted sign.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I’m not political at all so I’ll just say. Shit is fucked up ‘N stuff. I’m sure this will get removed from the interview. haha

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
