Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott and Christie Heartquist.
Scott and Christie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Scott and I were married almost 15 years ago with the dream of one day raising our children on a farm. It took us close to 10 years to finally be in a place to make this happen. We moved to Arizona 4 and a ½ years ago from Alaska and found a piece of property where we could start making this dream a reality. We believe raising our children around livestock teaches them to be responsible for something other than themselves, helping them become more responsible human beings.
Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest struggle with starting Heartquist Hollow Farm has been a specific focus. We started out selling micro greens, then started growing produce to sell, we increased our animal herds to provide a limited quantity to the public, and bake and can fresh items for the market. We are able to provide a wide range of products, however, I think it confused our customers. Our main goal the last few months has been to narrow our products and be clearer to our customers.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a small urban, family farm in the heart of Gilbert. We raise meat sheep, a heritage breed of pigs, and chickens. We sell eggs, baked items, and farm fresh products in jars at local farmer’s markets. We are proud to have our children work alongside of us with our animals and at the farmer’s markets. We are very excited to offer freshly made products from scratch each week at the market using real ingredients. We are working on sourcing more ingredients locally.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our area is a great community to start a small business and grow it organically at a farmer’s market. The Cottage Food Law helps new businesses save on costs and overhead.
