Today we’d like to introduce you to Samara Cyn.
Samara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Murfreesboro Tennessee, but I was raised a little bit of everywhere. I moved to Arizona about 3 years ago straight out of high school to start college.
It wasn’t until February of last year (2019) that I wrote my first song. It took me a LONG time to believe in the music and believe in myself to the point where I thought I could possibly go somewhere with it.
Music started as a hobby. But over the year, it’s turned into a necessity. Writing a song is a productive therapy session. Telling my story and other people’s story in my music… or even just making feel good music… it’s peaceful and it gives me something in the end that I can be proud of. It’s art.
I think I’ll always turn to music for that. And God bless those friends and family that helped me believe in my music enough to share it. I’ve been putting my songs out slowly, but I’ve been performing A LOT. Which is also an amazing feeling. It’s no question that this will be a part of who I am forever. And this is really only the beginning.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not. My dad always says that “anything worth having is worth going through some things for”. Being an artist is fun. Creating is fun. But when it comes down to the business side of things, that’s when it gets real. That’s when you really have to buckle down and put the work in to learn.
So as more business opportunities present themselves, I’ve just been sure to keep on my toes and make sure I’m staying aware of all the details. Make sure that I’m doing my part to read up on the industry and learn from the vets.
Also, just trying to maximize the use of my time right now is definitely a grind. I’m 21 years old. I have two jobs and I’m a full time student at the university out here in Tempe. When I’m not working or being a student, I’m in studio sessions, I’m performing, I’m writing, I’m in collab meetings. I’m definitely a busy bee, but I honestly wouldn’t want to do anything else. I have two paths ahead of me… and if I work hard enough, I feel like I could travel both if I set my mind to it—merge them and create a whole new path for myself. I feel like potential is limitless if we let it be.
Tell us about ur business. What do you do? What do you specialize in, what are you known for? What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a rap artist and songwriter. I create the kind of music that I want to listen to. I think my speciality kind of shows through my penmanship. I love writing music: from R&B songs to rap to pop. I’ve developed more comfortability and a deeper passion for rap music. I try to bring that same swag from those old school hip hop bops I listened to growing up. Trying to incorporate my favorite elements of all my favorite rap idols. Storytelling from Slick Rick. Rhyme schemes from Biggie. That low aggressive Kim flow. I try to study those things that I like… make them my own and put them in my music in a modern way.
I believe more people know me for my videos on my page. Some cyphers and radio freestyles here and there. I’ve been performing around the city a lot since November—starting with the 2019 Arizona Hip Hop Festival. I perform every other week at the Poetic Soul event in Downtown Phoenix. That feeling of genuine connection with the people in the crowd… to just feel your words on stage and show that what you’re saying is real… that’s what I’ve been working on; while I still have so much to learn, I believe my progression has shown itself over time.
Who else deserves credit?? Has anyone played a big role in your success? Who are they and how did they help?
Michael Knight is my main producer/engineer. He really set me up with the basics when I first started and continues to work with me and just be that second voice of reason as I get more into this. We always seem to be on the same page and although he’s not out here physically, we’re like partners in crime with music. Always in each other’s corner and never biased with our suggestions/advice for each other. We genuinely want the other to succeed and we know if one makes it, the other does too. Period.
Of course I got to give glory to my parents and The Divine. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without them. Honestly still don’t know if I’d even believe I could do any of this without them. I can always count on them to be honest with me and have my best interest at heart.
