Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Gomez.
Lisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have overcome some obstacles and been blessed along the way. While I was working full time & halfway through my master counseling program I became a widow & single mom of a three year old. With the support of my family, friends & church I graduated and began working in the field with troubled teens. After a few years, I went to another job and was trained in working with teens with eating disorders. The facility I was working at was Christian, so I also began to learn how to incorporate Biblical principles into counseling. It was at that time that I decided I wanted to work for myself, I had started a new family and was now away from my two kids ten hours a day. This is not the way I wanted to rear my children, thinking my clients were more important than them. I was spending more time with troubled teens than my children. God gave me a vision of being able to help people and nurture my own family as well. So I began to build a small practice part time on the side. Unfortunately, it was around the time of the 2009 recession.
While I was trying to grow this part-time business, my husband lost his job and I lost my full time job, we lost our house, but we did not lose our faith or our family. We endured through the years following growing my business from just me as a provider to me as a landlord to other providers. Within the next several years I went back to school & became a pastor. So in 2018 I took a huge leap of faith and opened a practice in Surprise and instead of a landlord I hired a team of therapists. I am the owner of the day and a youth pastor on weekends. I wanted to develop a practice where people could get the help they need emotionally, but also spiritually. Recently we have been able to bring on a nurse practitioner and a registered dietician as well, so we can help with physical needs as well. I am blessed to say the vision and dream God gave me is coming together right in front of my eyes.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some parts of this journey were easier than others. The unexpected loss of a spouse and a job were certainly the rough times. Through that however my God never left me, it was then that I believe he was caring for me.
Tell us more about the business.
Most counseling agencies work with individuals and their families. We believe in going beyond the system. We believe each individual has their internal systems working with the external system. We treat the whole health system. We address the emotional, social, spiritual, physical and financial aspects of an individual. We have a passion to help people become their best self. Our name “Becoming Transformed” is derived from the Bible-Romans 12:2″Be transformed in the renewing of your mind”. We whole heartedly believe in helping people in every system possible.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The mental health industry is finally getting the acknowledgment it deserves. There is no longer as much of a stigma for people with emotional or mental health issues. The industry is going to stay the same providing individual and family therapy. We, however, do not want to continue to work with individuals without the context of their physical and spiritual health to be included in treatment.
