Meet Justin Hodge and Josh Jurhill of Muscular Moving Men in North Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Hodge and Josh Jurhill.

Josh and Justin met at the Boys and Girls Club Osborn Branch in Old Town Scottsdale in 1994. From 1994 to 1999, they competed in everything from dodgeball to basketball (usually on separate teams which started a lot of fights.) BGCS was torn down around the year 2000 to build Scottsdale Stadium where the SF Giants now play baseball.

Josh and Justin both attended Saguaro High School from 1999-2002. Lettering in sports including basketball, track, football, they spent more time on fields than in classrooms at times.

Justin attended Arizona State University and graduated in 2006. Josh did not attend he university however he seemed to spend more time than Justin did on campus and near dorms.

Josh excelled body building and won multiple Mr. Natural Arizona awards from 2006 to 2009. Justin worked for a local moving company, learned the trade and the two men decided to start moving furniture after their normal day jobs in 2008.

With a borrowed truck and trailer, Jx2 began getting calls left and right from friends and family needing moves. They needed a name for this emerging service. They couldn’t simply be Justin & Josh Moving, all of a sudden an idea arrived… Muscular Moving Men. The name stuck and they have been providing “Outstanding service, competitive rates and muscles for a move made easy!” Ever since 2008.

Fast forward 10 years later. Muscular Moving Men and Storage have become the largest local household moving company in Arizona employing more than 50 hard working Arizonans and competing 300-400 moves every month.

With plans for expansion across the entire United States starting in 2018, Justin and Josh have visions of becoming THE movers of choice for families across the country on their big day… “We care about our customers, we believe in giving back to our community and our training is the best in the industry.”

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business in 2008 during the “Great Recession” seemed like a good idea at the time because we honestly just did not know any better. Moving is always a service that people will need regardless of whether they are downsizing or purchasing the new home of their dreams. We were able to gain traction pretty quickly with smaller moves like furniture delivery from stores but as time went on we progressed into larger home moves.

The first truck that MMM purchased in 2008 was a 1997 Freightliner with more than 300,000 miles and way past its prime. Part of the MMM tradition is to name our trucks after action stars, body builders and heroes so naturally this was the original “Arnold” after the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. Once the truck was checked out, the first move completed was a long distance pick up in Los Angeles, CA. A few breakdowns later, we had successfully completed our first long distance move and never looked back.

One of the first big tests for Muscular Moving Men was in 2011. At that point, MMM was three moving trucks parked in a fenced in yard at a small office of about 1,000sf. One morning Josh and Justin arrived to find that all three trucks had been completely vandalized; windows smashed, tires slashed, fuel drained, batteries stolen and rocks inside the cab. It was a sobering moment to call the days customers and cancel moves as well as start paying for all the damage repair. It toughened our team up and after that, we adopted a guard dog named Maximus who became a part of the company’s identity.

The moving industry, in general, has a lot of turns over because, well its a tough job. Creating a culture and an environment where employees stay long term has been hard but very rewarding. There have been a lot of great movers come and go over the years which is hard but the team we have built today has been through the toughest of days in the hot Arizona sun and weathered the storm to become one of the busiest movers in Arizona!

Each mover passes a Certified Packer & Loader test and training program when initially hired and training is routinely assessed and updated to cover the ever changing needs of our customers.

In addition to local and long-distance moves, Muscular Moving Men also offers storage. The key to success when it comes to storage is the safety of the items so the team offers storage vaults which can be loaded onsite at customer homes and stored safely in the MMM surveillance monitored, secure and air-cooled facility in Phoenix, AZ. Whether there is a small gap in home sales or a long-term need, your items will stay professionally wrapped and safe for the duration of their visit to our state of the art secure facility.

Once the move is scheduled, the hard part of packing begins for most clients. Muscular Moving Men offers a full packing service with the highest quality packing supplies. These supplies can also be purchased by visiting the MMM Supply store online and there is even free delivery for orders over $100! Rest assured if you have some unused supplies left over on moving day, we will credit and take back those as needed.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Phoenix, AZ is one of the top 10 fastest growing markets in the country and is always in the mix for inbound residents looking to make a new home. There are exponential growth and new communities popping up left and right. There are a lot of moving companies professional or otherwise, that are trying to get a foothold in the community so it is very competitive. It’s a great place to start a business and being born and raised in the valley, Josh and Justin have found it really rewarding to be here and give back.

With partnerships of groups from Phoenix Children’s Hospital to Hope Women’s Center, there are many deserving charities in town that we have been excited to be a part of. With more than 50 employees, 17 trucks and a warehouse full of customers it has been exciting to see how we have grown over time.

Overall the moving business is well suited for the Phoenix market. In terms of regulations, it is one of the least enforced cities in the country and the grid system makes it very straightforward when locating clients homes. There will always be a need for movers in the valley of the sun because of how spread out the Phoenix metro area is.
