Meet Jacob Hamilton of The Simon Stylez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Hamilton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jacob. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in the smallest town in the world – Moravia, New York. Knowing full-well that small-town life was not for me, I broke my parents’ hearts and asked to move across the country to Arizona. I really had no plan when I moved but knew that there was so much more opportunity awaiting me, and Phoenix was growing exponentially! I had always been involved in choirs and musical theatre.

So, naturally, I pursued those while finishing high school in Phoenix. During that time, I was given the opportunity to design the hair and makeup for CATS The Musical at Spotlight Youth Theatre. That same year, along with my co-designers, I was awarded an AriZoni Award and a National Youth Arts Award for Best Hair and Makeup Design. With the fear of student loans looming over my head, and still riding the high from my “wins,” I decided to withdraw from college a week before move-in. Instead, I enrolled in Cosmetology School at Empire Beauty School. I went on to become a Student Mentor, as well as receive the school’s “National Student To Watch.” Throughout my schooling, I worked multiple jobs and continued in my passion for theatre. This meant that I had to go nearly two years without seeing my family, as my schedule wouldn’t allow for travel.

My hard work paid off, however, when I won the AriZoni and National Youth Arts Awards for Hair and Makeup Design for the following three years. With my career blossoming, I thought it best to brand myself, but using the name of my alter ego, Simon Stylez. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work in multiple film projects with big names, such as Tiny Lister. Fashion also played a large part in my early career, as I was working with Phoenix Fashion Week on a multitude of projects. One of my most rewarding privileges, though, was giving back to the community, partnering with organizations like Arizona Trans Youth and Parent Organization (AZTYPO).

Our goal was to make individuals going through transition feel more comfortable in their skin while raising money for their cause. I pride myself in my continued education with Hatori Hanzo and Unite Hair; I believe in constantly perfecting my craft. I continue to work behind the chair in an amazing location, Public Image, in the heart of Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row Arts District with some of the most talented artists in the state.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would consider my journey to have been a relatively smooth one. Of course, the biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome is being so far from my loved ones. My family, my parents especially, are my biggest supporters, and where I derived my character and work ethic. I would also say representing your own brand, and doing all of the footwork, is equally challenging and rewarding.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Simon Stylez – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My specialties started out with stage makeup and wig styling/updos. Eventually, I applied my art background, and began doing special FX makeup too! As I got further into my career, I found a true admiration for haircuts, namely fades. When it comes to hair color, my strengths have always been balayage, blondes and vivids!

I am always looking for new techniques and taking new courses! I believe that education truly makes this career limitless. You can also never go wrong with a good ol’ refresher on the basics! When I marry these skills and techniques with my creativity, I am producing work the is truly unique to me.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc?
My parents have always been inordinate examples of hard work. My mom and Dad worked two jobs each for a substantial amount of my childhood. I strive to emulate their work ethic. I’m so thankful to have them, as well a the rest of my friends and family in my corner.

I have to acknowledge the people who took chances on me, taught and pushed me. Forgiving me my first jobs as a Hair and Makeup Designer: Kenny Grossman, Mark 4Man and Lynzee 4Man. Angel DeMichael opened up her salon to me and taught me so much about being a hairstylist. Kim and Darryl Brandt constantly cheer me on and provide me with education to further my career. I’m also lucky enough to work amongst some of the most talented artists in Arizona. They help me challenge myself to produce adaptive work.

Most importantly: I have to thank my clients. I’m lucky enough to have some that have stuck with me since day one: Tamara Treat, Paulina Pantoja, Brian Carmona, Rachel and Trey Frye, Barbara Chase, Austin Kelley, Ryanne Maxie, Marcia, and Annie Callaghan, and more. I give sole credit to the continued success of my business to the faith and loyalty of clients, and friends. These people all keep my job from feeling like work. Every day I get to come in and be creative while swapping stories, or having a heart-to-heart.
