Meet Colton Smith of Buddy Smith Fitness LLC in North Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Smith.

Colton, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was raised in Iowa and attended high school there as a multi-sport athlete. I then attended the University of Northern Iowa where I was also involved with football. I graduating in 2013 with a BA in Human Movement: Exercise Science. After graduating I was a paid intern for an Athletic Performance company where I helped run the Summer strength and conditioning program at a local high school. I found my first training job at Lifetime Athletic North Scottsdale in October of 2013, which initially brought me to the Valley. I became a trainer at Orange Theory Fitness, where I gained experience in several different facilities and rose to the position of Head Trainer, leading a franchise location at 26. After staying with OTF for 4 years I was blessed with the opportunity to start my own LLC and was a part of the initial group of trainers opening Glory Gains Gym. Here at Glory Gains, I currently train athletic performance, 1 on 1, and small group training.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always struggles along the way in anyone’s story and I am no different. Being from small-town Iowa, the most difficult part has been understanding the genuine mentality and intent of people I’ve met, especially coming from a different demographic and sector of the country. Keeping a good base of people around me is always essential to helping me grow and expand my thought processes.

Tell us more about the business.
While I am excited to help all people on their health and fitness journey, my certification is as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and I am more specialized in the advancement of athletic performance and the overall strength and conditioning of Athletes.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The fitness industry as a whole seems to be becoming much more critical and discerning of who is promoting what and the motives behind that promotion. In my opinion, this has needed to happen for some time and is helping to shift out purpose to a more  genuine intent and outreach to help truly change lives.

As far as my specific field in strength and conditioning, we are seeing more and more, that maintained efficiency is king. Training in the most transferable ways, the most maintainable ways, and the most progressive ways are essential to staying at the top of your craft.
