Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Reckseit.
Barbara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a native New Yorker, now living in the Southwest and the designer and owner of BD Designs. I have such a passion for designing jewelry. BD Designs was created when my youngest child was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism at a very young age. Designing became an outlet for me to share my creative vision and prove that while my child worked hard to face his daily challenges, I too could gain a sense of self worth & fulfillment from dedicating my energy to this labor of love. BD Designs are handcrafted pieces that are made from natural elements. I am always exploring the latest trends and keeping my customers wowed with my innovated designs. Each style is made meticulously and with lots of love. I hope you enjoy wearing my jewelry as much as I enjoy creating it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning your own business always has it’s struggles. I think my biggest struggle is trying to be in two places at once. There are so many communities around that I would love to participate in every local show, but being one person is sometimes challenging to try an manage. I constantly tell myself that one day I will hire someone to help with local art events.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BD Designs – what should we know?
BD Designs has been around for a while and what I love about my company is that my jewelry is handmade. I specialize in and what I am known for are gemstone beaded bracelets, one of a kind resin pendants and bezels which are designed to be worn as necklaces and bracelets, wire wrapped gemstone necklaces plus much more. I am constantly creating new designs, keeping up with the trends, and taking classes to learn new techniques. I am very proud of what I have accomplished with BD Designs, by being available to all my customers, by helping my them pick and choose different pieces that will wear well together. I love helping out other artists who are interested in participating in local art shows. I always say there is enough to go around for everyone. I think what sets me apart from others is that I am very meticulous with all my designs and if they are not perfect, I will take them apart and redo it. I want all my customers to know how much pride I take in my work.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The biggest credit goes to my amazing fiancé, who not only supports everything I do, but who is always there for me at every art show. He helps me set up, sell and tear down the booth at the end of the shows. He loves talking with all my customers and getting to know them and things about their lives. He likes to get to know who they are so they aren’t just another customer, but some who turn out to be friends or good acquaintances. He supports all my decisions with my business, but if he feels that something isn’t quite right, he will always explain his reasoning to me and will always say, just his thoughts, but it’s my final decision. He never steps on my toes, but will give me the best business advice he knows that will only improve mine.
My children as well deserve some credit, they are my biggest fans and love to support me, by telling me how beautiful my designs are.
