Today we’d like to introduce you to Bonnie Fu, Andrew and Jane Ho.
Bonnie, Andrew, and Jane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In the fall of 2010, we started Phoenix Wushu Academy in a small rental space in north Chandler. We had 7 students and barely anyone even knew what Wushu was, much less about our new school. Thankfully, we were blessed with very supportive parents and students that appreciated the high-quality coaching from Master Ho and the tight knit leadership from Miss Bonnie. Their continued talks with their friends and family about the benefits of our school soon brought droves of students and within half a year our studio became too crowded to fit all the new incoming students. Within a year we produced our own theater work of Mulan and it was critically acclaimed for its creative and artistic take on the life of the famous Chinese heroine. We were featured by the media outlets from all over Europe, Australia and over 13 provinces in China. Over the years we have gained recognition as one of the most prestigious and professional schools in the nation. We are currently home to 11 US National Traditional Team members and many of them will be representing the US in the upcoming 7the World Kung Fu Championships. We are extremely blessed to have the opportunity to be a successful Wushu school in the US and in take part in the effort to promote this amazing sport to everyone we know and hopefully more people can love Wushu as much as we do.
Has it been a smooth road?
As they say, “Nothing worthwhile comes without a challenge.” We have definitely had our share of difficult times, especially at the beginning of the school. We’ve struggled to promote Wushu to the public because it is surprisingly unpopular considering how almost everyone has seen some form of Wushu whether it be in movies or in real life. Most fight choreographies that are shown in movies are in fact Wushu, but unfortunately, Wushu is mistaken for Karate, Taekwondo or some other form of martial arts. Fortunately, we have managed to change some of the false presumption with the community we are in. However, we are still striving every day to promote Wushu to the world around us. Hopefully one day we can get majority of the public to appreciate the artistic, physical and cultural value of Wushu.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Phoenix Wushu Academy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Phoenix Wushu Academy, we are known to be the top in our field in terms of professionalism, training technique, and facility. We specialize in training and bringing students to the top level of Wushu where they get to compete nationally and internationally representing their school and their country. Many of our students came to us lacking in coordination and physical capabilities but they have transformed into confident athletes through our training. To us, the most fulfilling part of running the school is to watch the improvement and transformation of our students as they blossom into better and more confident athletes and people. We currently have 11 US Traditional Team members that are going to represent the nation in the 7th World Kung Fu Championship this November. We take pride in giving our students the opportunity to have life experience that is only available to a handful of top athletes in the world. Wushu is an extreme sport and it is by no means easy to master. That’s why we always strive to bring our students to the top because we want them to be able to take pride in themselves knowing that they can achieve anything they set their mind to as long as they have the heart to work hard for it.
Our school family is also a tight knit community that has strong ties inside and outside of training. We pride ourselves in bringing people together and having them form lifelong friendships.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Chandler is an amazing city that provides both the urban and suburban benefits unlike many other major cities. It has both convenience as well as large living space that it makes it impeccable for young adults as well as families.
Since it’s a growing metropolitan city, the traffic has risen dramatically and it has started to become a hindrance during sometimes especially during after school and rush hour. However, Chandler is definitely one of the best cities to live in and we can’t be happier to have started our school here.
