Meet Amina Lewis of Mina Nekay in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Lewis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been attracted to the fashion and beauty industry since I was a kid. I’ve always wanted to do something related to fashion. In high school, I decided to go to cosmetology school, upon graduation, I was licensed. After being in the field for a short period of time, I decided I was only interested in the beauty field but, not passionate. After coming to this realization, I decided to attend college and majored in Business and Fashion. That was the best decision I could have ever made because I found my true calling. Going to class felt like an adventure rather than a task. After receiving knowledge and hands-on experience, I decided to branch out and create my brand.

In the summer of 2018, I was invited to pitch a shoe design to the well-known brand: PUMA, well-known rapper: Big Sean, and other industry professionals. From that moment on, I took my brand seriously and I’ve been dedicated to it wholeheartedly.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely isn’t easy. I’ve been hit with many obstacles while trying to achieve something great. I’ve been bombarded with financial issues, personal issues, and loved ones not believing in me nor my brand. But, things worth achieving never come easy, right?

Mina Nekay is a luxurious and couture fashion brand. It represents power, elegance, and luxury for men and women. The idea behind the logo of Mina Nekay shows two heads that resemble the “yin and yang” symbol. The upright head represents high-end wear for special occasions such as galas, award ceremonies, weddings, prom, etc. The opposing head is for everyday streetwear but with a couture flare. Bringing them both together creates the overall wardrobe of one person for any occasion. It’s a lifestyle not an outfit.

When wearing my pieces I want the individual to feel of high importance, like they’re the only one who matters in the room. It should make them feel confident and powerful, it’s not just clothing, I want the person to feel like this internally.

This is why I’ve also created styling under the same brand, ideally for an individual that needs assistance with their confidence from day to day or a specific occasion.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Boy oh boy, a lot of opportunities that I’ve received have been by risk-taking and luck I’d say. Every opportunity that presents itself, I more than likely take. I feel like that one opportunity can be the luckiest day of your life and you’ll never know where it’ll land you.
