Meet Alexhandra of Hotko Bread Co in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexhandra Hotko.

Alexhandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hotko Bread Co started as a ‘someday over the rainbow’ goal. Beginning with my experience baking family recipes, primarily from Czechoslovakia, for over 20 years. Much like a cliché, when I turned 30, I readjusted my goals and decided to focus the year on diving into the details of what it would take to make Hotko Bread Co my primary focus and leave my career. At the end of that year, my website was active, permits where in process and I was delivering Eastern European baked goods throughout the Phoenix valley.

Now, Hotko Bread Co can be found at Clark Park Farmers Market weekly (Saturdays, October thru April), while also offering baked-to-order delivery throughout the Valley of the Sun. The menu has expanded to include some Polish recipes in addition to the Czech ones that make up the bulk of the offerings. It is an honor to introduce Arizonans to my heritage thru breads and I look forward to expanding into additional markets as well as local events. I hope to share this passion and my Bohemian Baked Goods with as many people as possible so that they too, may experience a little piece of the old world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Developing my own business has not been a completely smooth process as there is no once manual that explains everything needed to get rolling. However, I pride myself in being as positive as possible, and have enjoyed the journey and connections I have made in the process of acquiring all the details and permits so far. There is a great wealth of knowledge that I have been lucky enough to acquire through other local small business owners that have gone thru similar processes.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Hotko Bread Co focuses on bringing Central and Eastern European breads and baked goods to Arizona. I focus primarily on family recipes that I have not found elsewhere in the Phoenix area. I am most proud of creating artisanal goods from scratch that are garnishing return customers, whether that be thru the beautiful swirls in a loaf of Babka or the savory crunch found in Zelnicky, sauerkraut crackers.

What were you like growing up?
I absolutely believe that the Phoenix market is a great place for other businesses like mine! It is of great value that others share their heritage and food is a great medium to start a conversation with people from all over the world.

I go to the Clark Park Farmers Market every Saturday primarily to buy Hotko babka or orange rolls. (The orange rolls are great with coffee!)
