Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamber Coleman.
Hi Tamber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A Little bit about Tamber… how I got to where I’m at today is still a surprise to me, I am a computer geek at heart sitting at home full-time stay-at-home wife with two kids learning the ins and outs of Hardware & software till I found a job placement that provided me with the field I was interested in, benefits and vacation times. I never would’ve imagined walking away from a Job that literally covered all the basis and essentials to take a career path I knew was a hit or miss on most days.
I started doing Locs 6 years ago and it was just a side hustle I would take clients in my living room when I would get off work, bringing in extra cash until I woke up one day looking at my calendar and cash app account realized I was making more money on my hustle then in my corporate position.
Long story short I choose the “hustle” and found my first shop to work in, I got my feet wet got a feel for working in this industry alongside other stylist and after 9 months I decided I needed more. I got on Google and found Salon Boutique signed my Own lease and I’ve had the pleasure of 3 upgraded suites all during the pandemic, as the clientele grows and the need for my services, I needed more space. This is my Full-time Business, the last 3 years I have traveled out of state for clients, I have clients driving from all over Arizona, clients taking flights, and driving hours just to sit in my chair. I’m more than just a “Loctician” I’m an educator and a student- every day I’m still learning on top of teaching other up-and-coming stylist what I know.
Some would call me a mentor or a big sis… I’m well known here in Az because not only am I one of the Best Loctician’s here I also manufactured hair growth products and skincare products that everyone loves. Every head I touch and every product I make is Love all over it I’m very compassionate and my quality of work shows just that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, the moment I choose to go and open my own shop 3 months later Covid 19 came and I had to completely shut down my business since is was a statewide Mandate. I was struggling to make my salon rent and just having money for day-to-day necessities
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
They should know that I absolutely LOVE networking, team building and learning more about business credit and evolving. So since they know me for my retwist & styles and Loc extensions I put myself out there and attend Marketing events and set up my vendors table every chance I get so that everyone gets to see the other side of my business.
I’m proud of myself because I didn’t just stick with being a hairstylist standing behind the chair, I’m also someone who provides training sessions to learn how to properly take care of Locs/Natural hairstyles.
What sets me apart from others is I’m self-taught and I have the speed and quality of someone who’s been doing this for 10 plus years and probably went to some sort of school, which that is my next step attending cosmetology college to be license and certified in every aspect of my career choice.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In order to get the Win, you have to be willing to take EVERY risk, being an entrepreneur or “Self-employed” is hard. You will spend more money supplying your business and marketing before you see the financial gain. You have to know that everything you put out is a representation of you and what you want people to see and know about you. I took the risk when I resigned from my job to “do hair” full time. You have to be prepared to pray for better days!! Even when you don’t see it, believe in yourself that the hard work pays off I’m still learning but I don’t regret my decision.
