Today we’d like to introduce you to Donella Hedges, MS, LAC, NCC.
Donella, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Donella and I am a first-generation, multiracial (Chinese, Filipino, Mexican, and Irish) mental health therapist serving the Arizona community. Although I am a California native, I have lived in Arizona for over a decade, a place that has deeply shaped both my personal and professional journey.
I originally moved to Arizona to pursue nursing; however, I quickly realized that while I was drawn to helping others, something about that path did not fully align. I had always held a unique perspective on mental health, and once I changed my major to psychology and behavioral health, everything clicked. This shift allowed me to reconnect with a passion that felt authentic and deeply meaningful.
I went on to complete a four-year graduate program with a specialization in trauma, where I developed a strong foundation in trauma-informed care. My lived experience, cultural awareness, and clinical training allow me to approach therapy with empathy, curiosity, and respect for each client’s unique story. I am passionate about creating a safe, affirming space where healing, insight, and growth can occur.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. My lived experiences and the environments I have navigated have deeply shaped the resilience and passion I carry today. These experiences inform not only who I am as a person, but also how I show up as a therapist—with empathy, humility, and an understanding of the complexities people bring into the room.
Despite the challenges of the past, I remain hopeful and deeply committed to a bright future. I am passionate about educating others on the importance of mental health, reducing stigma, decolonizing professional care, and supporting individuals and communities in accessing care that feels meaningful, affirming, and empowering.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently work within a wonderful group practice and provide therapy services to clients throughout the state of Arizona. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions, allowing for flexible and accessible care that meets clients where they are.
I specialize in working with first-generation individuals, BIPOC communities, military veterans, domestic violence survivors, LGBTQIA+ individuals, those formerly incarcerated, individuals with special needs, and those navigating suicidality, self-harm, and other trauma-related concerns. I work with children, teens, and adults, tailoring my approach to meet each client’s developmental stage and unique lived experience.
I am especially known for my niche as a first-generation, multiracial therapist. Having navigated higher education and professional spaces as a first-generation student myself, I deeply understand the complexities of identity, cultural expectations, and mental health. This lived experience allows me to offer culturally responsive, trauma-informed care grounded in empathy, validation, and collaboration.
One of my greatest strengths—and what I am most proud of—is my flexibility and ability to work effectively with clients across all age groups. From children to teens to adults, I adapt my approach to meet each individual’s developmental needs, communication style, and lived experience.
What sets me apart is my lived experience, paired with a strong commitment to ongoing growth and continued education. I believe that effective therapy requires not only clinical knowledge, but also self-reflection, cultural humility, and a willingness to evolve alongside the communities I serve.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Arizona is the growth and diversity the city has experienced over the past decade. As the community continues to evolve, I look forward to seeing more inclusive, accessible resources become available for individuals and families across all backgrounds.
