Life and Work with Mia Koehne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Koehne.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Music has always been in the backdrop of my life, but it wasn’t until I came through the many struggles, brokenness and hurts of not understanding my beautiful identity that the Lord began to use music as my calling and my livelihood.

During the process of healing, I would sit at my piano and “make up” songs and prayers. One day my husband encouraged me to share these songs. I hesitated, but eventually, I dared to share them. It was then that I witnessed the power of these songs. I thought they were for my own healing. I had no idea of the impact they would have on those that heard them. So I pressed on.

Since then, I have spent years crafting my gifts, and I now share hope through music full time with the Aspire Women’s Event Tour traveling the city, the state and country from the east coast to the west coast and everything in-between.

I love connecting with people and reminding them that healing, forgiveness, and redemption are possible. I seek to let the broken know that they are seen and to walk alongside the hurting.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. I had to get over feeling inadequate, and I had to step into the knowledge that I am uniquely gifted to do what I am called to do. I had to remember that open doors to share music were a blessing even if there were only a few people there. And now… well there are thousands, but it wasn’t always that way.

Surrounding myself with people that were cheerleaders for my joys and not secretly trying to tear me down was crucial. Be humble, love people, don’t be fake. People can spot a fake and are more receptive to your flaws than someone acting like they have it all figured out. Love people and let people love you.

There is no formula to get from point A to point B. All of our journeys look different, but having wise counsel and being able to take criticism and use it to become stronger, better and wiser is so important.

I routinely try (still working on this daily) to be Un-Offendable. Too often in life, we get offended by the smallest of things instead of allowing those things to roll off our backs like “water off the back of a duck!” Let things go, crush pride or pride will crush you and be willing to learn and to not be afraid to fail.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your work – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I work in the Christian music industry. I write songs. I write blogs, and I host and speak at events. I use music as a vehicle to deliver a message. A message of hope. And I use this same platform to be an advocate for children in poverty around the world through Compassion International encouraging people to support children through the Compassion Child Sponsorship Program.

A song a wrote years back called “You Are Not Alone” was first shared at a Celebrate Recovery event in Arizona. From there, it was featured on the Soundtrack CD for a major motion picture starring Vivica A. Fox called “Home Run.”

Since then, I have sung this song at every event I have done since and have seen a great response. To me, it is more than a song, It is my testimony and the heartbeat of what I do, reminding people that they are not alone, even though so many of us feel so lost, alone and completely forgotten.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Barriers to Female Leadership

The Christian Music industry is mostly populated by male singers. When I am on a big event or line up, I tend to be one of the few females for the night.

However, recognizing that, we as women press on and we don’t get discouraged. We just keep singing, writing and recording. Another aspect of what I do is speaking and the opportunities to speak and teach at events is huge.

I think finding our niche and pressing into it results in a great outcome and opportunity to impact people in amazing and powerfully effective ways.
