Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Guerrero.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by hairstylists. My dad has been a hairstylist for over 40 years and a salon owner for 37, so the salon was practically my second home. As a daddy’s girl, my dad has always been my rock. Even though he spent most of my childhood working long hours at the salon, he never stopped being my biggest inspiration. Watching his dedication, passion, and work ethic shaped me more than I realized at the time.
I spent so much of my life in his salon, building relationships with his team and clients, and during high school I worked there as a receptionist. Back then, I never imagined myself becoming a hairstylist. When I had the opportunity to attend cosmetology school while still in high school, I saw it as something I was doing mostly to make my dad proud. What I didn’t know was that it would completely change my life.
I went from someone who couldn’t picture herself behind the chair to someone who can’t imagine life without hair in it. Through this journey, I discovered not only a career, but a true passion. Being able to fulfill my dad’s dream of one day having me take over the family business, while also finding my own purpose and love for this craft, means everything to me. I truly believe my dad always knew I had it in me, it just needed to happen in my own time.
Today, my career means the world to me. I get to make women feel beautiful, seen, confident, and safe in my chair, and that is something I never take for granted. But the most special part of it all is being able to share this passion with the person who started it all for me my dad
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My dad has always done everything he could to make things feel smooth sailing for me, and that is truly one of my greatest blessings. My struggles were more internal and mental, especially early on. When I wasn’t sure I wanted to do hair, I found myself wishing that I loved it or that it came naturally to me. I spent a lot of time comparing myself to others and being hard on myself for not feeling that passion right away. At times, I felt like I was failing not only myself, but my dad too. Looking back now, I wish I could tell my younger self to trust the process. I truly believe that what’s meant for you will always find its way to you, and everything unfolds exactly when it’s supposed to.
We’ve been impressed with Miguel’s Beauty Salon, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Miguel’s Beauty Salon is a Latino staple in Phoenix, Arizona, proudly serving the community since January 1989. With 37 years in business, we were one of the first Hispanic owned salons in the city. What began as a barbershop focused on men’s cuts naturally evolved into a full-service salon, with women’s hair services becoming our main focus over time.
We are especially known for our expertise in thick, long, beautiful Latina hair. Understanding its texture, volume, and care in a way that comes from both experience and culture. This has always set Miguel’s Beauty Salon apart.
In the early days, the salon’s priority was efficiency. My dad believed no client should wait longer than 20 minutes and focused on getting everyone in and out quickly. As I step into a leadership role, I’m guiding the salon in a new direction, one that reflects today’s industry and clientele. Our focus is shifting from quantity to quality, creating a more elevated, luxury experience where clients feel cared for, heard, and unrushed.
When you walk into Miguel’s Beauty Salon, you immediately feel the family atmosphere. We proudly serve all generations, from grandma to mom, daughter, and granddaughter making our salon a place where family, culture, and beauty come together.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a very shy kid and didn’t truly come out of my shell until I became a hairstylist. I was definitely a goody-two-shoes, I hated getting in trouble and always tried to stay on my teachers’ good side. I loved having friends, and if I felt someone didn’t like me, I would do my best to turn them into one.
Family has always been incredibly important to me. Growing up in a big family, my cousins were my best friends and they still are today. I didn’t really have many hobbies as a child; I was usually at home or spending time with family. One thing I do clearly remember, though, was always being outside. Sundays were park days with my family, and that was our quality time together. I loved getting dirty, making mud pies with my brothers, and just being a kid. I truly loved my childhood those moments are some of my best memories.
