Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvina Thomas
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a multi-state operator, compassionate mentor, leader, and most importantly, a woman of color in the cannabis industry. As the founder and CEO of Fourtwenty Collections, I wear many hats as the brand encompasses THC infused edibles, CBD gummies, CBD skin care, a fashion line for men and women, and a dispensary / consumption lounge retail location in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A nurse by trade, I began my journey in the cannabis space in 2016 with a single bar of CBD infused soap, combining my healthcare knowledge with my passion for plant medicine. In addition to Fourtwenty, I am also the founder of the Arizona-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Start Living Inc., consisting of group homes and medical clinics for people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. This nonprofit invests in patients, offering potential job opportunities for graduates of the programs within one of her businesses. Our mission and greatest feat is to educate people on the benefits of medical cannabis and transition them away from opioids, while leading an organization to provide mentorship, strong ethics and dynamic leadership opportunities for those in underserved communities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a Black woman in the cannabis industry comes with its own set of challenges, especially when you’re navigating a space that’s historically excluded people like me. When I first launched FourTwenty Collections, it was a leap of faith, but I knew I had something special to offer. Still, that didn’t make it easy. I’ve had to prove myself over and over, even when I knew my vision was solid. The financial side of things, especially in the cannabis space, isn’t always a friendly or welcoming room to be in. It’s not enough to just have a good product—you also have to fight for the resources and opportunities others might take for granted. Then there’s the stigma that still surrounds cannabis, especially in communities of color. For years, these communities were disproportionately targeted and criminalized for cannabis use, and now that it’s becoming more mainstream and profitable, it’s interesting to see so many others benefitting while we were left behind. I had to work doubly hard not only to educate my customers about the value of premium cannabis products but also to educate them about the power of supporting Black-owned businesses. The competition has been another challenge. It feels like every day, there’s a new brand popping up in this crowded market. But the difference with FourTwenty Collections is that this isn’t just about cannabis for me, it’s about legacy, culture, and breaking down barriers. I had to figure out how to stand out in a sea of options, how to tell my story and let people know that what I’m offering is built from a place of passion, purpose, and a deep understanding of what it means to be Black in this space. But with every challenge, there’s been growth. The struggles have shaped me and my brand, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. It’s not easy, but as a Black woman in this industry, I’m here to change the game, make space, and inspire others to follow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Fourtwenty Collections is known for our commitment to quality, compassion, and community. We take pride in blending science with creativity, offering products that improve wellness and enhance lifestyles. Our mission to educate individuals about the benefits of medical cannabis, while creating opportunities for underserved communities sets us apart in a rapidly evolving industry. As a multi-state operator, mentor, and leader in the cannabis space, I bring a unique perspective as a woman of color navigating this industry. Fourtwenty Collections isn’t just a brand, it’s a movement dedicated to ethical leadership, social impact, and bridging gaps in access and education. What truly sets us apart is our ability to combine wellness and empowerment, offering not just products but platforms for change, whether through our dispensary or our nonprofit. Through Start Living Inc., our Arizona-based nonprofit, we invest in people. From group homes to medical clinics, we provide resources and mentorship for individuals overcoming addiction. I am most proud of our mission to educate and transition people away from harmful substances like opioids to healthier, plant-based alternatives. Equally, I take pride in leading with purpose, empowering communities through job creation, mentorship, and dynamic leadership opportunities. Seeing lives transformed through both Fourtwenty Collections and Start Living Inc. is the most rewarding aspect of our work. Fourtwenty Collections is more than a cannabis brand, it’s a platform for change, healing, and empowerment. Whether you’re enjoying one of our delicious edibles, exploring our CBD skincare line, or visiting our retail lounge in Las Cruces, you’re supporting a brand that cares deeply about wellness and community.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey is the power of resilience and staying true to your purpose. Both of my businesses, FourTwenty Collections and Start Living Inc, were born out of a desire to help others. Whether it’s through providing natural, sustainable products or supporting people in their recovery journey, both stand as true passions of mine. Along the way, I’ve faced challenges that tested my patience and determination, but I’ve realized that success comes from perseverance and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact. It’s also crucial to build a community around your vision. None of this could have been possible without the support of my team and the people who believe in our mission. Collaboration, integrity, and adaptability have been key. Every setback has been an opportunity to learn and grow, and that’s something I take with me every step of the way.
