Hidden Gems: Meet Maria Vargas of DomumFV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Vargas.

Hi Maria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Maria Vargas, founder and lead architectural designer of DomumFV. I launched the company in 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona with the vision of creating architecture and interior-design spaces that are modern, functional and tailored for both the U.S. and Latin American markets.

My studies in architecture began in Panama, where I had the opportunity to be involved in large-scale projects such as the Panama Metro, Tocumen International Airport, industrial warehouses, and water pumping stations serving vulnerable communities. Those experiences shaped my understanding of how architecture can directly improve people’s lives through functionality and impact.

After moving to the United States, I expanded my work into commercial and residential architecture, as well as interior design projects. This transition allowed me to blend technical rigor with a more personal, human approach to design, and that’s how my professional path evolved into what later became DomumFV.

Beyond my professional journey, my path has also been shaped by personal growth and resilience. I studied architecture in Panama while working in construction and raising my son as a full-time mother, with my family still living in Colombia. It was a period that tested me physically, emotionally, and intellectually — balancing classes, work, and motherhood often meant designing and building models late at night after putting my child to sleep. That experience strengthened my discipline and my sense of purpose; it taught me that being a mother and being a professional are not opposing roles but complementary ones.

I’ve learned that success is built on consistency, learning, and the right support system. I don’t believe in doing everything alone — I’ve had incredible allies along the way, from mentors and colleagues to my partner, family, and friends who’ve shared this journey. To me, where you come from doesn’t define where you can go; discipline, preparation, and readiness to seize opportunity make all the difference. That mindset continues to guide how I lead DomumFV and how I live my life today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been easy. Starting over in a new country while studying, working, and raising my son required a lot of strength and patience. Then I repeated the story, now adding a new language when I arrived in the US. There were moments of doubt, but also a deep sense of purpose. Every challenge — from language barriers to late nights balancing motherhood and design — helped me grow more resilient and grounded. I’ve learned that the road doesn’t have to be smooth to be worth it.

At DomumFV, design is more than structure: it’s an experience that transforms how people live and feel in their spaces.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that with discipline and organization, you can achieve more than you think. I’ve realized that it’s possible to do many things well when you manage your time and energy with purpose. Another key lesson is to never stop learning — growth comes from staying curious and open. And perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned to see mistakes not as failures but as part of the learning process. Every challenge, every misstep, has taught me something valuable that I carry into the next project.
