Today we’d like to introduce you to Gbemisola Akinwande.
Hi Gbemisola, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a self-taught fashion designer, and my brand name is “Ololade.” It all started when I was in college studying Microbiology because my parent wanted me to be a doctor like every Nigerian parent. But I’ve always loved fashion, so I started designing in my second year in college. I began by redesigning my tee shirt, and when my friends saw it, they wanted me to do theirs, too, and that was how it all started for me. Now, I do everything from ready-to-wear to custom dresses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been challenging; being a Mom of three and a self-taught fashion designer has not been easy. I’ve failed many times, had a lot of setbacks, and received a lot of Nos. But I’ve learned from every failure, and all those challenges I’ve experienced have made me a better person and designer.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fashion designer; I specialize in ready-to-wear clothing. I’m known for my contemporary designs. I love making versatile pieces that can easily translate from day to night look. What I’m most proud of is the woman I have become. I have allowed the hard thing I’ve been through to make me resilient. I believe my point of view is what sets me apart from others. I believe in quality over quantity. That is why everything I do, including fashion quality, is first. I want to create an affordable luxury line using the best material.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe passion and hard work are important. You have to be passionate about what you do and keep working hard. You have to love what you do; if you have passion for it, you won’t easily give up.
