Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Miller.
Hi Kimberly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a psychotherapist and substance abuse counselor, I had this idea after I had been in the field for many years after working with a cutting-edge treatment center called the Meadows where I helped open the first flagship Outpatient Center in Scottsdale. That is where I was introduced to world class leaders in psychology who were there to teach. It ignited my love for psychology. I decided I wanted to learn all the major psychological trainings and yet they were all complicated and separate. I wanted to know what would happen if clients didn’t have to go from psychology office to psychology office looking for the right tools for them. What if we could offer a menu of options and clients could try different approaches? I always believed in a truly client-centered approach. I trained in IFS, Somatic Experiencing, Brain Spotting, Hypnotherapy, EMDR, CSAT, and the Meadows Model. Some of these took 5-10 years each. After learning these modalities, I became aware of what a gem Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback/Biofeedback were, and I added a unique neuroscience approach which was a steep learning curve. Clients with ADHD, Autism, Sensory Disorders, OCD, resistant depression and PTSD, and anxiety tended to come up empty-handed. People also loved getting brain maps, which are 3-D images of your brain that provide reports regarding your likelihood of sleep issues, memory issues, or mental health issues. Our clients began to fill the lobby with everything from an autistic 3-year-old to an 80-year-old with substance use disorder and trauma-all. No person is simple, and no approach should be either. People loved it, and we felt honored. Things like autism and ADHD don’t always have a real clear solution, and Neurofeedback was something to try, and most clients reported care/good results.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This was not a smooth as I all learned all these different modalities. Many of these different sciences I learned didn’t always speak together initially, and I had to travel across the country to finish different sections of courses. I sat with people that didn’t really understand therapy practices, and sometimes, I was on the outs for not being a certain mold as each training has their own character. For almost a decade, I struggled with some severe medical issues; a parent developed brain cancer and passed away, and several family members struggled with their own demons. I kept going, though, and found some healing in all of it. I always like to see how we can use the fabric of our own life’s lessons to extend understanding-I especially love to work with people that have chronic pain after my own struggles with autoimmune disorders. I was taking it easy and it was actually quite a complicated adventure to go on to study these different trainings and open a clinic. I was in school and conquering some medical upheaval. Sometimes it took years to strategize a way to attend. I began to realize I wish everyone could and should be trained in many things because it makes you less flat in your approach.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Kimmillercounseling.com and Neurofeedbackaz.com?
I own Kimmillercounseling, which is a truly integrative approach. My closest friends tease me that I might be one of the most trained people in the world. I’m not sure if that is true, but we certainly have a lot of options for clients to work with. I also am CEO of NeurofeedbackAz.com, where we do state-of-the-art Brain mapping and Neurofeedback and biofeedback. We have some of the most advanced equipment in the world. I tried to bring a completely integrative approach to my practice offices. We started to see that clients achieved their goals in ½ the time because we could provide them with almost any integrative option. Mental health, trauma, substance abuse, ADD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and relationship stress and most things under the sun! We love serving the Phoenix area and being a part of the community (we have offices in Tempe and Scottsdale) and I have been in practice for over 27 years.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I just simply don’t give up. I just don’t. I once read a study on success, and they said that most people fail constantly -in fact, you have to fail at least 10 times to succeed for most things statistically. We only record successes in history. You don’t always see what it took to get there. I thought that was brilliant. Our failures really are never actually failures, and no one gets everything right the first try. I also like to be on the edge of everything I have ever known; otherwise, am I growing? I would not want my doctor to stop learning the most cutting-edge medical skills, also it helps to know I’m serving some fantastic people in the community, and it makes it all worth it. I love working with clients with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and are really some of the most magnificent intuitive people I have ever met, I learn a lot by listening and hearing their stories. I also wanted to share that our clients have been achieving their goals with efficiency. Client found their time and money was worth every penny because they got real results in ½ the time and didn’t have to wander from office to office. I think my success personally and as a clinic has come from quality over quantity and a commitment to advancement-an “aggressive” approach to finding answers. People first, quality first. Personally, I found my biggest asset is overcome your own beliefs and commit to yourself and it is not easy.
