Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Gorritz.
Shawn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is Shawn Gorritz and I am an Artist/Photographer/Jewelry Designer living in Tucson, Arizona. My business is called 3QuarterMoon Creative and it encompasses all of my artistic adventures. My weapons of choice are pen and ink, laser cut jewelry and most recently, polymer clay sculpture and hand painted resin.
I am inspired by just about everything, but I lean towards Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi and Comic themes.
I became interested in art when I was around 5 or 6 years old. I watched my older sister draw horses and dragons and, wanted nothing more than to be as good an artist as she. As a young adult and into my maturity, I chose Graphic Design as my career, but I longed to get back to my passion of making and expressing myself through art. In November of 2017 I took the leap of faith and quit my career and comfy life to do just that! I’ve since stretched my “art legs” in ways I never would have imagined. I have no regrets.
My tastes are constantly evolving – this is both a blessing and a curse. I suppose I am a bit of an art-squirrel in that I really do jump from one project to another at a moment’s notice. It can require a lot of discipline to finish any project I start as I may find passion in illustration one day and sculpture the next. I sometimes think this is a terrible way to be “successful” but I can be no other way.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love dark and whimsical art, but I really am inspired by so much more. I would say my style borders on horror, fantasy, science fiction and the comical. I also am drawn to exaggerated textures and dark colors.
My primary art is laser-cut acrylic and polymer clay jewelry. Recently though, I have been creating illustrations and polymer clay sculpture. My illustrations as of late have been based on life in the deep ocean and animal oddities. My sculpture has more of a creepy and fantasy vibe. Since most of my art has dark overtones, I hope to connect with people who also love strange and fantastic art styles.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I feel I’ve already achieved personal success by quitting my career to do what I love. It hasn’t been and continues to be difficult. However, I am proud of myself and the road I have chosen to pave. My next goal is to keep building a presence and creating a following that will help me to continue my journey. I also intend to keep expanding my talents and not being afraid to try new things.
A characteristic I feel is essential to my own success is self-discipline. It can be too easy to get distracted, to keep hitting the snooze button and procrastinate instead of getting in the studio when I feel unmotivated. It’s a misconception that all artists are lazy and I hope to disprove that notion! This is my life AND my business. I will never achieve the financial aspect of living and working as an artist if I laze about and create only when I “feel like it.”
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can support by art the most by buying from my web shop, www.3quartermooncreative.com. I do, however, do art shows and cons in Arizona, California and Nevada. I hope to spread out to New Mexico and Texas.
As the year gears up for the holidays, I am attending several conventions in Tucson and Phoenix. People can check my show schedule on my Facebook page: facebook.com/3QuarterMoonCreative
