Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie Robles.
Ronnie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve been an artist all of my life but I didn’t actually pick up a tattoo machine until my late thirties. Even then, it was only to tattoo my family and friends. At the time, I was married and had 5 children at home, there was no way I could leave my job for a tattoo apprenticeship. It wasn’t until my early 40’s – I’m 47 now, that I began to pursue it professionally. I was divorced in 2010 and remarried in 2012. My wife now is very supportive of my new career and our schedules work perfectly to allow me to do it. I’m older than many of my peers, the new up, and coming artists, but I’m young in the game. I’ve really only been doing this professionally for 3 years now but I’m establishing myself and I feel like I’m making good progress.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My tattoo style is realism and my favorite subject is anything floral. I’m someone who really takes my time to get it as close to “perfect” as can be. I want my clients to love their tattoo and that’s the exact response I expect to hear. This is my job and I do it foremost for the money, to pretend otherwise would be silly. But I can honestly say that the art really matters to me. That’s why I turn down a lot of tattoos. I do what I do and I try to do it well.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Specifically for tattoo artists, I would say competition. Not because of artists being better necessarily, but because of there being so many. My clients have to pass 20 tattoo shops just to get to me. Sometimes, the price drives people to other shops.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Social media is where you can find my work. My full portfolio is on Instagram. I have a website that’s up and running as well but it’s still under construction.
