Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Brown.
Hi Jeff, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The path into this work is deeply rooted in lived experience and community support. After nearly twenty years of struggling with addiction and involvement in the justice system, the challenges of rebuilding a life became very real — not just achieving sobriety, but finding stable housing, meaningful support, and genuine opportunities for long-term recovery. These experiences highlighted the gaps that many individuals face when trying to transition from crisis to stability.
About seven years ago, recovery became the turning point. With the support of the recovery community, the focus shifted toward rebuilding life with purpose and helping others facing similar struggles. That journey led to earning peer support certification, followed by forensic peer support training to better serve individuals involved in the justice system and their families. These certifications helped strengthen the ability to support others navigating recovery, reentry, and long-term stability.
Through community involvement, Step One Halfway House continued to grow as a nonprofit focused on helping individuals transition from addiction, incarceration, and homelessness into stability. As the organization expanded, a larger gap in services became clear — many individuals needed more than sober living. They needed structured treatment, peer support, and a full continuum of care.
That need led to the development of Step One Behavioral & Residential in Phoenix, with a mission centered on residential treatment, outpatient support, transitional housing, and work therapy programs. The goal has always been to build something rooted in community — a place where individuals are supported not only in recovery but in rebuilding their lives with dignity.
Today, with seven years in recovery and a strong community behind this work, the focus remains on helping individuals rise, recover, and rebuild — because lasting recovery happens when communities come together to support one another.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people in recovery, my journey has included setbacks, challenges, and learning experiences. For nearly twenty years, I struggled with addiction and found myself in and out of the justice system. Those experiences were difficult, but they also shaped my perspective and gave me a deep understanding of what people in recovery are truly facing.
Even after getting clean seven years ago, rebuilding life didn’t happen overnight. There were challenges with rebuilding trust, creating stability, and finding opportunities. Starting and growing a nonprofit has also come with its own obstacles — from securing funding and navigating regulations to building programs that truly meet the needs of the community.
However, those struggles have ultimately strengthened my commitment to this work. Each challenge reinforced why organizations like Step One are needed — because recovery is not just about getting sober, it’s about rebuilding a life. Today, I see those obstacles as part of the journey that helped shape both my purpose and the mission of Step One.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The work at Step One Halfway House and Step One Behavioral & Residential is centered around helping individuals rebuild their lives after addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. The focus is on developing programs that provide structure, accountability, and long-term recovery support. These efforts include residential treatment, peer support services, transitional housing, and work therapy opportunities designed to help individuals regain independence and stability.
This work is rooted in lived experience and shaped by the recovery community. Having experienced addiction, involvement with the justice system, and long-term recovery, the approach emphasizes compassion, accountability, and practical support. Earning peer support certification and forensic peer support training has further strengthened the ability to serve individuals navigating recovery, reentry, and family reunification.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this work is creating opportunities for individuals who feel they have run out of options. Watching someone enter the program struggling and later transition into stable housing, employment, and sustained recovery reflects the power of community-based support and long-term care.
What sets this work apart is the commitment to nonprofit, community-focused care built on lived experience and collaboration. The mission goes beyond treatment — it focuses on helping individuals rebuild their lives with dignity, while strengthening families and the broader community.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is helping people realize that change is possible, no matter how far they’ve fallen. Having spent nearly twenty years in and out of addiction and the justice system, I know how easy it is to feel like there’s no way forward. When I finally found recovery seven years ago, I was given an opportunity to rebuild my life, and that’s something I believe everyone deserves.
That’s what drives me today — creating opportunities for others to find stability, purpose, and hope. Whether it’s helping someone find safe housing, meaningful work, or long-term recovery support, those moments matter because they change not just one life, but families and communities as well.
At the core, what matters most is lasting impact. When individuals are given the opportunity to rebuild their lives and move forward with dignity, the effects ripple throughout the community and create meaningful, long-term change.
