Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan J.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I run a personal finance blog over at ArrestYourDebt.com. I have a passion for personal finance and education and I am on a mission to make money a normal household topic rather than a taboo one.
I am married and have three children, a girl, and two boys all under the age of ten. My wife stays home with the kids so I know how challenging it can be to live off of one income. Much of what I write is based off my personal experiences and what I have learned in the course of my life.
My financial journey began when my wife and I saved up a sum of money and I didn’t know who I could trust to invest it. After several interviews with financial advisers, I still didn’t feel like I could trust other people with my money. Due to this, I began my journey to educate myself by reading every finance book I could get my hands on. After getting a good handle on debt, finance, and investments, I decided to start this blog as a resource for others who find it difficult to trust people with their money.
As far as my “real job”, I am a police lieutenant for a large police agency in Arizona. I have been a police officer for 15 years and I have seen the devastation left behind by people who mismanage their finances. This also motivates me to educate as many people as I can.
For my formal education, I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Administration Degree from Northern Arizona University. In addition to being a police officer and blogger, I am an adjunct professor at a local community college.
My blog is dedicated to those looking to eliminate their debt and to mold a new way of thinking, living, and spending. Education focused on financial stability and wealth is the main purpose of my blog.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business at Arrest Your Debt has been a difficult journey due to the limited time I have available during the week. I am still a full-time police officer so pursuing another passion has proven to be difficult. With that being said, I have been able to help many people through my blog and financial guidance. Helping people transform their financial lives have been an amazing experience that I am humbled to be part of.
I know that time management will continue to be a struggle for me but writing about finance is a passion that brings me a great deal of satisfaction.
As far as challenges I have seen in personal finance, I see the major challenge as being a mindset change. People who I work with start out with the belief that they will never actually get out of debt. They have succumbed to the lie that debt will always be a part of their life. By changing their thought process and showing them how they can control their money, I help people stop digging and start climbing out of their messes. It’s an amazing transformation to witness!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Arrest Your Debt – what should we know?
I am the only one behind Arrest Your Debt so I find it very fulfilling to be able to mold it to exactly what I envision. Often other personal finance blogs have a team of people who write for them, which can seem much less personal when you learn from them.
At Arrest Your Debt, I write directly for my followers and for myself. I receive emails from people and reach out to them as a person with genuine care rather than a large business entity. I understand that as my blog grows, it may become much more difficult to connect with people on a personal level and that is something I will continue to fight.
As far as my specialization, I enjoy helping people get on a budget and to direct their money to things that add value to their lives. Far too many of us spend money out of habit or convenience on things that add little to no value to our lives. By eliminating the unnecessary expenses and putting our goals out in front of us, I help people get out of debt and start building wealth they never thought possible.
The truth is, this world can be a very confusing and unpredictable place. With all the unknowns, it is important to take control of the things we can actually manage in our lives. Through proper financial planning and management, we can eliminate financial stress and make money the least of our worries rather than the cause of them. I help people prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. There is enough stress in this world – money doesn’t need to be one of them!
How do you define success?
Success for me is to never give up. I have found the value of setting up a plan for myself in each and everything I do. I’m not talking about big elaborate plans, but more of a framework for what I want to achieve and how I’m going to get there.
Take finance for example. If I had $10,000 in credit card debt, I would make a simple plan that says I need to pay off $5,000 in 10 months. I would break it down by weeks and days to know exactly how much money I need to save each week and each day to achieve my goal. By breaking down large problems into smaller more manageable tasks, I can set myself up for success by giving myself a clear path.
There will always be setbacks in life and I may not achieve my goals when I originally wanted. However, if I continue moving forward after life pushes me back, I will eventually reach my goal. The problem most people have is gathering the courage to actually start moving toward their goal. It can be difficult to get started when your obstacle seems like a huge mountain in front of you. By breaking that mountain down into little hills, you will eventually climb to the top!
