Today we’d like to introduce you to Priya Kalra.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born in India, raised in Zambia-Africa, graduated from London-UK, and now settled in sunny Arizona-USA. I am very grateful to have lived, shared, and embraced different cultures in my life thus far. I have been married 15 years now and am a proud mum of two girls.
Being an entrepreneur for most my life, I juggle my businesses both in Zambia as well as Arizona. Being a business owner in our awesome community of Chandler, taught me a lot and I am very fortunate to have met so many amazing people in this lovely community of ours.
Giving back to the community is something I am very passionate about. I was honored to be recognized as one of the amazing women of Chandler in 2019 for a talk show I started called “Female Friday”. Through this platform I was highlighting women bosses in my community and sharing inspiring stories of why they started their business and how they balance their personal and business life.
Every year I also put together an event for young entrepreneurs in our community. Chandler’s Annual Kids Business Expo is a one-day event that allows our young entrepreneurs, age 8 and up, to come up with creative business ideas and sell to the public. This event really brings together our community and it gives our children a chance to experience what it takes to earn money. I am very grateful that I have the support of small business owners in our community who donate to make this possible, as well as support from the Chandler City Council members and the Mayor and his wife.
But life sometimes has different plans for us and being diagnosed with Cancer, was not one I had ever imagined. Going through this unwanted journey, I still continue to give back to the community by sharing my cancer journey and sharing inspirational talks as a cancer survivor story teller.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
While I continue to run my business in Zambia, I had to make the tough decision of selling my business in Chandler, as, after all the chemo treatments and surgeries, my mind was running much faster than my body could keep up with.
We always make decisions, that are best suited for us at that point in time, and sometimes we are forced to change our course of path. Cancer came into my life at a time when I thought I had it all figured out, but clearly life has other plans. I was proudly able to conquer cancer with a positive mindset, which was not easy by any means, but I was able to keep my eyes on the end goal and let nothing come in my way.
Starting a YouTube Channel “Conquering Cancer & Beyond”, is where I share survivor stories. I interview cancer survivors and share what got them through this unwanted journey, because if I can help just one person see the light at the end of the tunnel, I will consider myself lucky because you never know whose story can become someone’s survival guide one day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your Entrepreneur side. Tell us more about that.
Having always been in the IT field, I continue to be involved in different technical projects in Zambia and in the USA. Developing technology enablers for the mid market industry is something that I am focused on at the moment.
I believe there is work you do to feed yourself and then there is work you do because you are passionate about it. Meditation helped me get through the tough phase of my life, and I wish I had learned to do it earlier. I want to help others learn to meditate and show them how it brings you closer to yourself. Everyone should have a meditation space, a space that allows you to quieten your mind and clean your thoughts. When I was going through my journey my space made me feel at peace and this is something I love to help others do.
I truly believe we all offer a unique service and we all speak to others who can connect to us. I’ve never looked at anyone as a competitor because if you can relate to my journey you will be drawn to me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have always lived by the mantra, “Everything happens for a reason!”. Having lived, shared, and embraced different cultures in my life and going through cancer, I have learned the only thing that is really needed is Love, but most importantly self-love! I am now on a simple mission to spread love by speaking about my journey that’s made me fall in love with myself and who I am today!
