Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahshid Asrari.
Mahshid, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
With a clear vision of how I wanted to practice endodontics, I moved from Wisconsin to Arizona. Dental pain can be excruciating, disrupting every aspect of one’s life. As an endodontist, I get to relieve that dental pain and allow patients to get back to what’s important in their lives. My philosophy is simple; provide root canals of distinctive quality with unsurpassed comfort.
The rapid growth in Gilbert was just beginning when I arrived. There was still very little development in south Gilbert at the time. There were a lot of dairy farms and alfalfa fields. While driving by an alfalfa field on the Southeast corner of Pecos and Lindsay, I knew where I needed to build my practice. Everyone involved thought I was crazy. An immigrant female investing to build a practice in Gilbert did not seem logical. The demographics didn’t fit. The location was too far south. But I knew if I built according to my vision, it would succeed. Every detail was thoughtful and intentional. From design (a calming reception area with Persian columns and rugs) to equipment (surgical microscopes and 3D imaging) everything was fashioned to improve both the quality of treatment and the patient experience.
Although we’ve seen ample challenges along the way, Asrari Endodontics has continued to grow for the past 12 years. I now have a team of three Board Certified Endodontists (with plans to add a fourth). Although I am pleased to see my vision fulfilled, my most valued memories are when we genuinely touched others’ lives. I smile when a patient leaves free from pain for the first time in days. I am quietly satisfied when a patient is so relaxed that he falls asleep during a root canal. I am delighted when a patient is so pleased that she wants to give me a hug. This is what makes being an endodontist so satisfying!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
More than I can name. Those who thought I was crazy weren’t entirely wrong. From securing lending to construction, people did not always take me seriously. The construction foreman would always ask if he could talk to my husband. Some dentists were unwilling to meet with me. A couple patients even asked when the doctor was coming in! This attitude was and still is, surprising.
Asrari Endodontics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Not everyone knows there is a dental specialty dedicated to root canals. But that’s what an endodontist is – a root canal specialist. I completed a 2-year residency in endodontics after dental school, earning both a master degree and a specialty certificate in endodontics. I do a lot of root canals, retreatment of root canals that have failed, and surgeries on the tip of the root. Root canals have a bad reputation, I wanted to create an experience that focused on patient comfort to help change that reputation. So I founded Asrari Endodontics in 2004 to provide root canals of Distinctive Quality with Unsurpassed Comfort.
For distinctive quality, I worked to become a Board Certified Endodontist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a Specialist Member of the American Association of Endodontists, and a Fellow of the Arizona Academy of Endodontics, Although we have a lot of special touches to provide unsurpassed comfort, it really comes down to our culture. “What’s best for the patient?” is the reoccurring question. We greet every patient cheerfully and try to make their day better. I am excited to read a patient post on Yelp that he “had a great experience getting a root canal. Who knew that was possible!” We did. That’s what we do.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Mentoring others and watching them succeed. Five of my assistants have moved on to become dental hygienists.
