Meet Kyle Herrig of Triplex Training in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Herrig.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an athletic trainer that started out working in a physical therapy clinic for about 10 years. Throughout that time, many clients would come in with injuries or issues that were very preventable with a simple strength routine. The clinic I trained in was very functional-based, so I learned how to train body movements rather than isolating muscle exercises like a typical gym routine. During my time at the PT clinic I would work with individual clients as they transitioned from ending physical therapy to returning to their desired activities- essentially bridging the gap. As my client base grew, I learned more and more how this could positively affect individuals. And as private training was somewhat limiting, I eventually added small group workouts. As this business was growing under the umbrella of the physical therapy clinic, I ventured out to my own facility in 2014 and we’ve been growing ever since. Now, the majority of our business is group fitness- members pay a monthly fee and come to any of our “‘set” workout times for a pre-designed workout with instructions and coaching. Our focus is full-body movements that target cardio, strength, core, mobility, and balance. Workouts change every single day and we continually provide instruction to make sure each individual gets the most out of their workouts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been fairly smooth. I was able to gradually grow while practicing within the PT clinic, the big challenge came when I ventured out on my own as this was a huge step! I had a client base, but needed immediate growth to sustain a larger facility. While that first 6 months was a bit stressful, the growth happened and we’ve continued to build our member base.

Please tell us about Triplex Training.
The biggest differentiator for Triplex Training is our philosophy of training individuals. Rather than pushing super heavy weights in a single plane of motion, we focus on movements that the body actually uses in real life. Rather than restricting one to a machine and a limited range of motion, we are upright and activated multiple muscle groups in one single exercise. This allows for a much better calorie burn and a more function, life-like workout that prepares you for activities of daily living. Most machines and Olympic lifts are strictly in the sagittal plane of movement- the push-pull movement. The problem is, our life is in three dimensional space and we move laterally and rotationally. It is our goal to make sure we help prepare your body for these types of movement, so you don’t end up injured and are much more efficient. Once someone jumps in on our workouts they realize what they were missing with their “traditional” workout routine as they feel soreness in different places.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling to Russia for 3 weeks. I was able to “live” with the people in a small village 1500 miles east of Moscow and really understand the people. It was great to see that people are people no matter where you are and to learn a different culture. The big thing I learned on this trip is how fortunate I was to be born and raised in the United States and came to appreciate the little things much more.
