Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Hamilton.
Kisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a love for everything beauty— From Fashion Design to Makeup. My mom always told me I would own my own business in this industry, but like many millennials, I thought, Corporate America was the way to go if I’m going to make it in this world. Let’s just say, I was selling myself short. I’ve always been artistic in nature, but on many occasions suppressed that energy from fear of never being “good enough”.
As I was approaching 35, I was evaluating the things that I’ve done with my life and equating them to the things I wanted to do. Nothing seemed to add up. One day, as I was preparing for an event of some sort, I stumbled upon YouTube. I needed assistance with the perfect look for this event. I figured, hey, if I can learn how to make turkey for thanksgiving dinner, surely I can learn how to do makeup from YouTube. I typed in how to do my makeup. Scrolled down until I found someone that looked like me. I found Jackie Aina. I must have watched ten videos that week to learn how to do the perfect look for one night. As I continued to watch her videos the more intriguing it became, and I began buying products she recommended in order to practice on my own. As time went buy, I began creating looks and posting them on my Instagram. My friends and family began saying, wow teach me that look, or can you do my makeup for an event. I kept practicing and people began to recommend me for Fashions Shows and Events, which allowed me more time and more faces to practice on. I remember the first event I did back in 2017. It was the Herstori Wraps event. I met so many artists that night and received so much love for my work that I was motivated to keep learning.
I was inspired by the talent and beauty these women represented that I pushed myself harder and studied more artists. I saw that these women all had something special. Something unique that made them stand out and I wanted to figure that out for myself. I’m an introvert so, going out and networking is not on my list of to dos. I would sign up to attend and have a panic attack preparing to go. It is such a struggle for me, but I know it’s the only way I’ll accomplish what I am setting out to obtain—to be known for exquisite makeup artistry and a master makeup artist in the Bridal industry. I learned that soft glam is my thing. I love to create Soft, glowing, supple looking skin. I have learned that I create looks that make women feel as beautiful as they look when they leave my chair. I like to think my clients had an experience not just a makeover. My goal is to always allow them to see themselves. I love to find features on clients that are unique and point them out to show them how beautiful they truly are. One of the things I would like to do with my brand is to create experiences for women, whether it’s in my chair or socializing with other women. This year I’m planning an event Mother’s Day weekend, called Woman on the Glow! It will be an event focused around self-care and beauty for mothers and daughters. I truly believe that you can change a person on the outside but if you don’t give them something to believe in themselves from the inside, the very essence of who they Can be, then they will never feel as beautiful as they look.
So this event is to give women a look at other women in different industries going after their dreams to inspire women and their daughters to follow theirs—no matter how young or “mature”. I plan do also bring back my Makeup & Mermosas Makeup and Beauty classes. It’s a class where women can get together and learn makeup and beauty techniques to encourage intentional self-care while sipping on Mermaid Mimosas. I know a lot of people out of state because I am originally from Atlanta, GA, so I am putting together online tutorials for people to purchase. Within the next couple of years, I want to put out a beauty line. I started with Kishispirit iLashes, but there’s more to come! I’m really excited about all things Beauty and am looking forward to servicing women across the globe with Kishispirit iMakeup. My company motto is Let Me Bless Your Face, iBlend to please. I’m a domestic violence advocate, so I will never “beat” anyone’s face, but I will Bless it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Because I am an introvert. I struggle getting out there and making myself known to the public—still learning effective ways to do that. Financially, my company is not where I thought it would be by now, but I am putting in the work to change that. I plan to succeed in my failures no matter what it takes. Sometimes I struggle with my age because I feel I’ve started this journey too late. However, I’m inspired by people like Danessa Myricks who didn’t let her age get the best of her when she began her career in beauty. I always say, if you lived this life and have not learned, then you have not lived. I plan to live, laugh and learn along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kishispirit iMakeup, LLC – what should we know?
Kishispirit iMakeup started off as an opportunity to do makeup for others to look their absolute best for their planned events. My goal is to do more and incorporate ways to encourage women to feel confidence in who they are rather than just their looks. I believe the look I specialize in is the Soft Glam, glowing skin look. All of my work embodies, beautiful soft and glowing skin. What I would like to set me apart from other artist is that I will support other artists and women in their endeavors to reach their highest heights. I plan to put on events every year so that I can donate proceeds to go towards foundations that help women get on their feet. I plan to continue to so volunteer work just because it is empowering and building another woman in the industry. I’m a self giver, a people pleaser if you will. I am that person that builds up other people even I never get credit for it—I mean that in the most humble way. I just feel that’s why I stand out. I am a drama free, spiritual person who enjoys seeing other people happy.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality or characteristics I feel is most important to my success is remaining humble and diligent. Overcoming fear of not being “good enough” by going out there and doing “my thang” and not trying to replicate what makes others successful.
