Meet Joe Haldiman of Fit N Seal and AZ Outdoor Fun in North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Haldiman.

Joe Haldiman is a 4th generation Arizonian that grew up in Phoenix. For the first several years, Joe worked in various construction jobs before deciding to start his own business from scratch. In 2007, Joe opened up Arizona Outdoor Fun, which has become incredibly successful and a big attraction for both visitors and AZ residents. The company now employs several people and brings in millions in revenue. It’s a true entrepreneurial success story!

Joe went on to identify a problem in the realm of consumer goods. While sifting through a drawer of mismatching sippy cup tops and bottoms, he asked, “why in the world is there not a universal fitting sippy top that I can just pop into any drink and give to my kids?” From that, he designed that Fit N Seal seal that did exactly that. The uses expanded into a sports top, sip straw, spray top that all solved the same problems of being able to convert any plastic bottle into a convenient, user-friendly and reusable container for everyday people. That product launched in the summer of 2019, won an award for innovation and is now selling via eCommerce platforms, including Amazon.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. In the realm of AZ Outdoor Fun, that rents and conducts tours using ATVs, UTVs, etc. there are multiple hurdles to comply with regulatory requirements from the government and the accompanied costs. The bar is set very high to start and run this type of business to make sure the company is compliant and the customers remain safe and walk away with a great experience.

For Fit N Seal, the design, manufacturing, packaging design, intellectual property and getting the product out there is not a small ordeal. The consumer goods sector is extremely competitive and putting theory aside, the actual work and money to get a product on the market is a real challenge.

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
AZ Outdoor Fun is one of the first companies in AZ to offer our kinds of services. What prides Joe is that people have incredibly memorable experiences and for especially visitors to AZ, they see our beautiful landscape from a different perspective than you would from the air or a highway. What also is so important is that people are safe. That is not only for the liability to the company but to make sure customers have a great experience and may even overcome their fears associated with going out on an ATV or UTV.

For Fit N Seal, there are numerous product benefits but one specifically, is that it is a product that is a realistic way of reducing plastic waste. One of the attributes of the product is that it makes, with ease, to reuse plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are not going away anytime soon. There may be fractions in this with states and counties outlawing them, but overall, they are here to stay for the foreseeable future. What we can do as consumers to decrease plastic waste is; 1) recycle plastic bottles and, 2) reduce the need to produce more. By putting out a product that entices and rewards consumers to reuse those bottles, Fit N Seal reduces the need to make more and more plastic bottles. It might be a small part of the solution but it is part of the matrix of what needs to be done to improve our environmental health.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Consumers are more environmentally conscious and they are now realizing more and more what they buy has an impact on our environment. I see that government will, via ecolabels, or other regulatory means of curbing a business that has an impact on the environment. With AZ Outdoor Fun, we are looking at onboarding all electric ATV and UTVs for customers to request. We are welcome to this and other technologies that reduce our impact on the environment as it doesn’t impede us to make money or interfere with the customer’s experience.
