Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Gold and Spencer Bryant.
Haley and Spencer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
76th Street is the road that separated our houses yet brought us together to create music ever since. From the first day we hung out in 5th grade, we were already singing together, writing little jingles and recording embarrassing music videos. We found our love for performing through acting in musical theater through our teen years and from there began writing and composing our own original music.
To us, writing and entertaining were always more than just a hobby. We decided to completely dive into what we were creating for years and see where our passion would take us. Even with as much time that we spent together, we decided to be roommates our freshman year at ASU. That year allowed us to further our writing and build the future of 76th Street. Throughout those four years, we managed to balance being full-time students while performing over 100 shows a year.
Today, we can say that it continues to be an incredible ride to see what we are capable of accomplishing with our music. Just simply hearing someone say that they were able to connect and relate to our lyrics really makes an impact on us. Over the past five years, we’ve had the honor of opening for nationally touring acts, performing at festivals and distinguished music venues, and earning a slot at the 2018 She Rocks Showcase in Los Angeles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having a dream can definitely be scary alone, and it hasn’t always been easy. However, it has always been a blessing to be on the journey with your best friend. We have always had each other to lean on, provide guidance and strength when the other needs it and always be cheering each other on. Some difficulties that we faced were balancing being full-time students at ASU while also working towards a music career.
Aside from the actual school work, college had plenty of distraction to offer. It was very easy to lose focus and make other things priority. We can thank that experience for the strong work ethic we gained because it taught us never to take the eye off the prize. At the end of the day, we always knew where we wanted to end up so sometimes the social life and college life, in general, had to go on the back burner.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
76th Street is an Indie/Pop power duo centered around our friendship and love for creating. Our chemistry really does come out in our music, especially in our harmonies. Everything about us is really is this theme of “togetherness.”
People always ask us who does most of the songwriting and who sings the lead parts. We have over 100 original songs, and each one was written together, in the same room, with a piano and a guitar. As far as our singing, what sets us apart is our sound. It is as if there are two strong melodies that just happen to harmonize.
We each have our independence in our voice and personalities, but when we bring them together, it creates something entirely new. We have a five-song EP and two singles currently available on all streaming platforms. Aside from writing, we are entertainers.
We play all over Arizona and can really adapt to any stage, atmosphere, and setting. Our goal is to create as much sound as we can as a two-member group and entertain an audience.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
We’ve learned the importance of putting yourself out there without fear of judgment, In high school, we had a handful of business cards and went from restaurant to restaurant promoting ourselves. We’ve learned that the strategy and execution behind what you’re doing is just as important and it makes a huge difference in your success.
