Meet Carrie Hoffman of Bigger Life Adventures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Hoffman.

Hi Carrie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Getting to where I am today really started with sobriety. In 2016 I quit drinking after many years of alcohol abuse and entering recovery enabled me to start finding my purpose in life. I had always loved traveling, yoga, and the outdoors, but being sober allowed me to find a way for all these passions to intersect. In 2018 I began running yoga and adventure retreats focused on sobriety and recovery. I believe everyone is recovering from something, even if it’s not addiction. We all need community, time to self reflect, and opportunities to get out of our comfort zone in order to grow into our best selves!

My husband is a vegan chef, rock climber, and a real “jack of all trades”. Together we make the perfect team for running these adventure retreats. We started with just one small retreat at a campground in Southern California. Since then we’ve grown to offering many retreats every year around the southwest and are now starting to offer longer retreats overseas! It’s amazing to watch people enter a retreat stressed out from busy city life and gradually open up and relax as they spend time in nature with like-minded people! It’s a privilege to hold a space where people can truly open up to each other, share their hearts, and challenge themselves through new experiences!

When I’m not running retreats I teach yoga at a few places in Flagstaff and Williams, and also teach trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness at the Juvenile Detention Center, where I’ve been blessed to see the change these practices can bring to teenagers. Yoga, hiking, and time in nature have all been instrumental parts of my own recovery journey and I feel very privileged to get to guide and learn from others on the same path.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting sober was the hardest but most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I had to give up all my dysfunctional coping mechanisms and find a new way to live more honestly. I had to get back to basics with myself and re-learn who I really was and what I really wanted out of life. Today when I look back at my old, drunk self I don’t even recognize that life. I am truly living my dream life today and the process of getting sober was so, so worth it!

There are tons of different yoga retreats out there so we struggled at first to gain a following and stand out from the rest. Staying true to our values of authenticity, joy, connecting to nature, and not taking ourselves to seriously helped us find our people! A sober, personal-growth-oriented travel experience is something a lot of people are looking for!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Yoga and adventure retreats focused on recovery and healing. Everyone is recovering from something!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I loved traveling from a young age. At 10 years old I got to fly by myself from the midwest to visit my grandparents in Arizona. I never knew I would end up living here but I guess it planted a seed!
