Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Murphy-Shannon.
Barbara, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
You know, that feeling when (TFW), you suddenly wake up from a nightmare and you’re not sure, “is it’s real or was I dreaming.” In your dream, you see yourself spending every day at your desk, doing the same thing, day after day, year after year…. Repeat. You’re caught in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over… Groundhog Day. It is crushing your soul. Once you wake up, you can’t go back to sleep. You can’t pretend you didn’t notice. I had to make a change. This was me four years ago. Finding another 9-5 office job wasn’t going to solve the problem. But honestly, I didn’t know what to do.
Not realizing it then, the Universe was sending me signals. Long story short, I had a couple of life altering events that woke me up. My sister passing away suddenly for one and I started to listen. I did some soul searching, had faith and lots of meditation. It wasn’t immediate but I started to get messages that I should be helping people and that’s when I decided to become a life coach. I realized I was here on earth to help transform the lives of as many people as possible.
There are many coaching programs, some life coaching models are grounded in theory and research and some are not. For me, research evidence-based psychology coaching was imperative to ensure I provide the highest quality coaching for my clients. I received my Graduate Certificate in Life Coaching in 2017 and I graduated with my master’s in psychology from Grand Canyon University in October 2019.
Before making this huge career change, I had a 30+ career in the spa, wellness and hospitality industry. I held several positions such as personal trainer, class instructor, health club manager, spa manager, membership director, vice president of business development, spa development consultant, and retreat manager. I also co-founded, Arizona Babies, a children’s natural bath and body line winning the “Best New Product” award at the Extracts Show in New York. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, owning companies or being an independent contractor (aka solopreneur). Working for yourself takes a different type of personality. A strong mindset is crucial to crushing and achieving your goals. I believe it was Tony Robbins that said, “Success is 80% psychology and 20% technique and strategy.” It’s the reason why so many small business owners still struggle even though they have access to all the information they need to succeed. I believe understanding human psychology (your own and your clients) is the holy grail to success.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I decided to go to grad school, change careers and start a new coaching practice when most people my age are moving into a 55 and older retirement community and playing golf every day. The road less traveled will never be smooth. Grad school was extremely challenging. Never mind the aggressive workload but the learning curve of online classes and the technology would test anyone’s determination and grit. It would have been easier to quit especially when you are required to take upper level Statistics (not my favorite class).
We made it and I say we, because my family and friends were right there supporting me through all the crying, late nights, early mornings, sitting in front of the computer for hours, backaches, elbow surgery (from having my arms on the granite countertop causing cubital tunnel syndrome or trapped nerve), missing social events because I had a paper to write and sleep… Missing lots of sleep. Did I mention sleep?
I’m not going to lie, I had my moments of feeling sorry for myself due to stress by deadlines, reading assignments, and spending way too much time on the computer but then you remember. You remember why you’re doing this; you remember the people that need your help are waiting for you. I recognized the quickest way to help people, and transform lives, was to help coaches, nutritionists, consultants, healers, service providers, or anyone in the ‘transformation’ business get their message out and help more clients. Why help one person, when if I help a coach or a consultant, they can help countless people.
Tell us more about the business.
I’m a women’s mindset business coach. I advocate for women that are ready to change. The ones searching for purpose and meaning to their life, they are the dreamers and doers, the women that haven’t given up, they’re ambitious but don’t always know what to do next, they struggle to find their voice and confidence, the ones that feel trapped in their relationship, job or life, the ones that want to take the talent and passion they have to create a product or service that will have a huge positive impact on the lives of others. They seriously underestimate themselves, the ones who need someone to grab them by the hand and say, “get back up, we’re doing this.” I champion for women entrepreneurs, solopreneurs or “wanna be” business owners, who don’t know, yet, that they are so much more capable than they think they are.
I approach coaching differently than most coaches today. I’m trained in psychological evidence-based Solution-Focus Brief Coaching and this has made a huge difference for my clients. Two pioneers in SFBT were Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer. Berg states, “Instead of problem-solving, we focus on solution-building. Which sounds like a play on words, but it’s a profoundly different paradigm.” Essentially, there is a shift in the amount of time spent discussing the problem. Instead, SFBT shifts the focus to what the client wants to achieve through visualization, that is a picture of the future, rather than picking over the past and the problems that motivated them to seek my help. When I first studied Solution Focused Coaching skills, I was immediately struck by how quickly it works for coaching clients, with its goal-directed, future-oriented approach. Clients are usually surprised at how positive changes take place in just a few sessions. My clients will learn a different way of thinking about their lives, their problems and how to focus on lasting solutions. With SFBT, the client decides how many sessions they need, not the coach. I believe the client is fully capable of knowing when they have found a solution.
I’m so proud of all my clients and the clients yet to be, who dare to seek help/coaching and take the steps needed to change, accept, create, and have the confidence to go after their dreams. Growth only happens when you do something different. “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude”. ~Maya Angelo.
