Meet Alicia Mandel of Medius Advisory Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Mandel.

Alicia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been working in Learning and Leadership Development in different companies for many, many years. And through these years, I’ve spent a significant amount of time in big companies, start ups, non-profits and privately held organizations. I’ve worked in industries like financial services, insurance, banking, sport and higher education. And there are a few things that all of these organizations, across all of these industries have in common…
1) They all have leaders and most of those leaders are working hard at driving their business results through their people.
2) They are all going through some sort of change.
3) They all have things to learn.

After spending my whole career making an impact to an organization from the inside, my business partner and I decided that it was time to turn it on it’s head and try to make an impact on more organizations, by working from the outside in.

Medius Advisory Group was born 3 years ago. We were confident we knew what organizations needed, and because we were the ones that hired consultants to come in and help – we were also confident we knew where there were gaps.

Our expertise is really around building a ‘people strategy’ that will drive and enable the business strategy. Unfortunately, many times in organizations the business strategy gets created and there isn’t much thought about the kinds of people – including leaders – that are necessary to drive that strategy forward. That’s where we come in.

Has it been a smooth road?
I guess it depends on how you define ‘smooth’. In one sense, it feels like we’ve been on a path to create Medius our entire careers. We’ve been on a road that involved learning, working with leaders, paying attention to how organizations and people change. As I mentioned, we’ve worked across industries, size of organization and organization type. We’ve worked with leaders at all levels – both in experience and knowledge. So, from that perspective – it all seemed to point to the same thing. Leveraging that experience in our own business.

That all said, I’m the breadwinner in my family – so leaving behind the ‘perceived’ safety of a regular paycheck, benefits, and PTO was a huge risk. But, as my friends and family will tell you – I’m not one to shy away from a risky situation.

And so far, we’ve been just fine. It’s challenging at a time – downright scary in fact. Balancing business development with actually delivering work and creating outcomes is not easy, and rarely can be described as ‘smooth’. But perseverance, a great network and a little luck have been instrumental in building a fantastic client base that keeps us busy while learning and challenging us all the time.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Medius Advisory Group is a small company that focuses on creating and driving a people strategy to support our clients’ business strategy. We work with individual leaders and executive teams on things like:

– creating and socializing business strategy and driving the culture necessary to support that strategy
– designing learning solutions that are tied explicitly to the business strategy and goals. These learning solutions and programs are experiential and immersive – rarely done in a boardroom or ballroom.
– driving and leading change through change leadership – not merely change management.
– executive coaching

We leverage various tools and assessments that we truly believe in – and can apply right away to drive business results.

The truth is there are a lot of companies out there that do similar things. We are different though. We’ve been very successful inside organizations – we know what works, we know how it works and in so many cases, we’ve done it from the inside. So, we won’t do anything on the outside that we know hasn’t worked, or won’t work. We understand how to navigate politics, how to influence and how to get buy-in. And, probably more than anything else – we’re truth tellers. We hold up the mirror and tell you how it really is. We won’t and don’t do what’s easy – we do what works.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Phoenix is growing. More and more companies are moving here, starting up here and expanding to here. And that’s great for companies like Medius Advisory Group. Because with that growth and expansion comes change. And that’s our sweet spot.

I’m not sure how many resources there are in Phoenix that do what Medius does, but I’m sure that there are not many that do it the way that Medius does. And for me, that’s great.

I have clients all over the country – but am always looking to expand my reach here at home. So, the more growth and expansion we have here – the better it is!
