Today we’d like to introduce you to Carole and Michelle Chetrit
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My grandmother and mother were my initial inspiration but then when I had children we would bake as fun art projects. I saw that Michelle really enjoyed the creative process so she began to further inspire me as well. When the pandemic began, I was furloughed from my professional job so Michelle and I, having a never ending list of cookie flavors in mind, began to bake and experiment, creating our original recipes. After baking consistently for about four months, sharing plates of cookies with our neighbors and receiving a lot of positive feedback, it dawned on us that we could have a very successful business so we ran with it. Thus we launched The Magic Crumb as our unique, home-based, artisan cookie bakery.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After perfecting our recipes, our biggest challenge was finding a website platform that fit our needs and to get our website built. We called on the help from Michelle’s twin brother, Stephane, since he had quite a bit of technical knowledge. We soon made him a partner in our business. Another challenge was marketing and advertising. We knew that having a social media presence was our best avenue for success. Michelle manages out Instagram account @themagiccrumb. This platform is known to be the most efficient for small business due to its ability to expand audiences through hashtags and promotions. We also distributed our business cards and flyers throughout the neighborhood in the hope of gaining local business but had little success. We are always seeking out new opportunities to reach more people that share a love for artisan cookies.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a licensed home-based, artisan cookie bakery in Silicon Valley, California. Through lots of experimentation we have created countless original recipes with flavors that we feel people would gravitate to. Carole thoroughly enjoys the chemistry of baking while Michelle enjoys using her artistic background for our designs and color combinations. We find it to be a lot of fun working together as a mother and daughter team since we both share a passion for baking and are both very invested in the quality of our Crumbs.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Due to the pandemic more people are using mail order than ever before. This has made it very easy for people to seek out their favorite comfort foods including lots of cookies. Through research, we found that cookies are rated as the number one go to food for all moods and events. Because of our location in central Silicon Valley, CA, we feel that our prospect for success appears to be promising. After the pandemic we hope to establish accounts with local cafes, caterers and businesses.
