Conversations with the Inspiring Shelley Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Franklin.

Shelley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for photography started when I was just a child growing up in rural Iowa and continued through High School.  It was there I began to learn Photography, how to develop film and worked on the yearbook staff. My love of creating images continued through the 90’s and it became much easier once DSLR’s became affordable for everyone.

Like many other Moms, I started working to perfect the photographs I took of my daughter. This led to hours of on line tutorials, and then enrolling in photography classes. Nine years later, after working for three months with an international portrait photographer mentor out of Los Angeles, I opened the doors to Franklin Photography Studios in March of 2017.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not always a smooth road. I struggled to break away from the role of “Mom with a camera” and value myself and my work. In a market that is saturated with point and shoot photographers and hobbyist photographers it was initially a struggle to stand out from the rest.

Running a photography business is so much more than shooting and editing photos. I worked hard behind the scenes to brand my business and create a studio environment like I had always dreamed of. One where my clients would feel pampered and comfortable and where I could offer a luxury photography experience above and beyond the norm.

What should we know about Franklin Photography Studios? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a portrait photographer!  I own a full-service boutique photography studio in Scottsdale, Arizona. I specialize in women’s and children’s portraiture, beauty, some boudoir, personal branding/headshots and am also known for my award-winning pet photography.

I believe that every woman deserves to look and feel beautiful. I am most proud of the attention to detail I offer my customers from start to finish.  No detail is overlooked in preparing them for a photo shoot. I offer pre-session consultations, complete with style and beauty guides before a shoot ever takes place.  I offer a selection of gorgeous gowns and wardrobe my clients have access to. I work closely with a team of hair and makeup artists in studio to give each client the look they desire and even the option of several hair and makeup changed during one shoot.

During the shoot, I guide posing and am educated on how to pose women of every shape and size to flatter their body type.

The Franklin Photography experience is one of a kind because of the attention to detail that is paid to the client and their images literally EVERY step of the way and because of the luxurious experience my team and I provide on the day of the shoot.  Women and girls of all ages are pampered and truly Queen for the day!

The experience itself is magical, and two weeks later, being shown 20+ hand edited, printed images is icing on the cake!  Gorgeous, fine art images you will cherish and pass on for generations to come. You only purchase what you love!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel the largest barrier women face today is finding real support from other women. It has taken me many years to find a group of women to surround myself with who are inspiring, and show true enthusiasm towards empowering each other. One of the biggest barriers seems to be our confidence is easily shaken, or we have worries about what people will think about what we are trying to accomplish.

Women unknowingly give away a little of our own power every time we do something to undermine another women’s confidence. This is why lifting and empowering each other is so important.  That is why I love empowering women through photography. It gives women back the power that belongs to us and shows us we have had it all along.

  • My Average client will spend a total of $1000-$2000 total for their photo shoot and the products I offer.
