Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Sher-Tuckerman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My voyage in art started when I was three and my mom took me to the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City for art classes. I was hooked by the colors and the surroundings immediately. Art continued to be my focus at Arizona State where fiber and recycling materials became my passions. The culinary arts took over upon graduating, as I became a chef in a restaurant and later a partner/owner in a small unique cafe in Missouri. Marriage and motherhood came next and my art took a turn into creating mosaic assemblages with thousands of objects. It was a dream come true to be featured in an HGTV series filming my artwork. Creating with cast-off treasures has always sparked my interest. Lately, I have integrated vintage and antique fabrics into one of a kind satchels as art adornment. Each satchel has a unique style and feeling.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a rocky road for female artists since the beginning of time. The pressure for me in college in the 70’s was that teaching art was the only way I could make money in art. The direction in giving business skills to the artist was non-existent at that time. I would advice young female artist to multi-task their talents and strengths in various jobs for themselves.
what should we know about Jst satchels? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I created jst satchels as a way to create art for people to wear. Each satchel is one of a kind made with hand-done elements. Each uses the most incredible and unusual textiles, mostly old and ornaments from all over the world.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The barriers to many artists are the markup on their pieces when trying to sell them commercially. More artist showings should be done independently.
