We’re looking forward to introducing you to Whitney Wagner. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Whitney, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
I’m learning from the incredibly talented photographers and models around me. Their creativity and passion continually inspire me, and their encouragement motivates me to follow what excites me and explore new directions in my photography.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Whitney Wagner, and I am a photographer originally from Hawaii, now residing in Arizona. My primary focus is cinema-style photography, where I enjoy working with the interplay of rich, darker tones and light to create images that feel both thought-provoking and emotionally engaging. While this is my usual approach with photography, I also work across a variety of genres, including boudoir and wedding photography, adapting my style to suit the story each client wishes to tell.
Currently, I am working on a special series of darker images in collaboration with several models, which I look forward to releasing by the end of this year. My aim with every project is not only to capture a moment but also to stir the imagination.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child, I believed that being an artist meant you had to be naturally gifted from the very start, that creativity was something magical you either had or you did not, if you were to truly succeed in it. I also wasn’t sure if my approach to things was “right,” especially because I was drawn to creating work that felt more moody and atmospheric. I thought maybe art always had to be bright, cheerful, and universally appealing.
Over time, I’ve learned that art isn’t about perfection or fitting into a mold. It’s about curiosity, practice, and the courage to follow your instincts. As an adult, I’ve realized I do my best work when I’m just being myself and leaning into what I truly love. Now, I no longer see creativity as something rare or exclusive. It’s something that grows when you give yourself permission to be authentic, and that authenticity is what makes the work meaningful.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. There have been moments when I’ve come close to giving up. Sometimes because I was in a place with limited resources and clients, and other times simply from the frustration of trying to figure out my own artistic path and what truly resonated with me. Those periods were challenging, but I’ve been fortunate to have my family and a small, supportive circle of people who encouraged me, reminded me of my potential, cheered for me even when I felt like my work was empty, and helped me push through. Without them, I’m not sure I would have made it to where I am today.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would say I treasure the little joys that make life feel warm. Cozy days curled up with a good book, the sound of rain outside, music, and losing myself to a creative project or craft. They’d also mention how much I enjoy sharing slow afternoons with friends, whether it’s chatting over coffee, diving into a board game, or getting excited about anything spooky and mysterious. For me, it’s those small, shared moments filled with warmth and a little bit of magic that really matter.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am absolutely doing what I was born to do. Between my photography and my other career focused on helping people, I’ve found a sense of peace and fulfillment that truly resonates with me. I wake up happy, and to me, that feeling is incredibly important. It’s a sign that I’m living happily and following a path that’s meant for me.
