Story & Lesson Highlights with Renn Estergard of Tucson

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Renn Estergard . Check out our conversation below.

Renn, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I love making artwork. My favorite times are when I get lost in the process and delighted in the outcome.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m nothing special. I’ve been practicing making art almost my whole life. I started sharing on social media about four years ago and thought I could make a business from selling what I make. I was not able to make that happen. I’ve actually been very crushed by my inability to connect with people online. I used to think if I shared my art people would be interested, but now I see very few people are and it makes me really sad. I love making art, but trying to share it amplifies my wounds of feeling like I don’t belong or deserve to be seen.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Seeing the horrific events happening in Gaza and the fact that nobody is stopping it has shaped my vision of the world. Over the past couple years it’s been heartbreaking to see crimes against humanity and the worst people in the world draining resources into billionaires pockets go unchecked. I see the abundance of the earth and the potential humanity could have if we cooperated. So, I guess seeing the evil things happening in the world changed how I see the world.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times I’ve given up. I find that who I really am and what I live for is clarified when I give up. Humans are meant to live in communities and work with the earth, so I’ve given up on the lies that capitalism sells.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that the earth is a living being.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Nothing matters except being kind. Life is interconnected, has inherent value, and owning things is an illusion that causes all kinds of problems.
