Story & Lesson Highlights with Mr Gavin Hammon of New York City

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mr Gavin Hammon. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Gavin, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
In a city like New York, where the real estate market moves at lightning speed, it’s easy to see only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what an agent does. People often imagine that we simply show apartments, sign contracts, and collect commissions. The truth is, much of the most important work happens quietly behind the scenes—long before a buyer ever steps through the door of a property or a seller sees their listing go live.

From researching comparable sales late into the evening, to negotiating with attorneys, lenders, and co-op boards, to coordinating inspectors and contractors, there’s an immense amount of unseen effort that goes into protecting our clients’ best interests. Every phone call, every email, and every detail checked twice is part of making sure a transaction doesn’t just close, but closes smoothly—with the fewest possible surprises along the way.

What rarely gets noticed is the emotional support and advocacy woven into the process. Buying or selling a home in New York City is often the biggest financial and personal decision a client will ever make. My job is to absorb as much stress as possible so my clients don’t have to—whether that means calmly navigating a last-minute board request, finding creative solutions to appraisal challenges, or simply being available at 10pm when anxieties creep in.

At the heart of it all, my role isn’t about transactions—it’s about people. It’s about making sure my clients feel heard, protected, and guided with integrity. My measure of success is not just getting to the closing table, but seeing the relief, joy, and confidence on my clients’ faces when they know they’ve made the right decision. That’s the part that matters most, even if the hundreds of hours of unseen work remain invisible.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a New York City real estate agent with Compass, where I specialize in guiding clients through one of the most dynamic and competitive markets in the world. What often gets misunderstood about my profession is that so much of the real work happens quietly in the background—hours of research, negotiations, and coordination designed to protect my clients’ best interests and make their journey as smooth as possible. My role is not just about transactions; it’s about people, and making sure they feel supported, informed, and confident every step of the way.

Working with Compass allows me to offer something truly unique. With innovations like Private Exclusives—listings that sell off-market while maintaining full discretion—and Make Me Move pricing, which helps sellers test buyer interest before committing, Compass gives my clients options that no other brokerage can deliver in quite the same way. Add to that our recent acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate (Corcoran, Coldwell Banker, Sothebys etc) expanding our reach and resources even further, and I’m proud to be part of an organization that consistently leads with vision and technology in service of clients. We also collaborate with Paramount realty auctions and Barnes International real estate who are a 1st class real estate agency worldwide as well as art advisory and yachting brokers…I can literally help you with all aspects of your lifestyle, connecting you to the best in class.

What makes my work meaningful, though, isn’t just the tools or the transactions—it’s the relationships. I remain deeply committed to ongoing education so I can keep clients ahead of market trends, and I value the connections I’ve built long after closing day. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, a seasoned investor, or preparing to sell your home, I approach every relationship with the same dedication: to put your goals first and ensure you feel cared for, informed, and empowered throughout the process.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Loss of trust can destroy a relationship.
Restoring a relationship is likely not possible when it comes to business as you only truly get one opportunity to make the right impression and certainly a loss of trust can destroy any future possibilities of working together.
This is why I run my business with my clients at the forefront. I work for them. Without them, my business would collapse. I cannot afford to make my needs the focus and at the forefront of the work I do.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I started to work in Real Estate shortly after the market crash of 2008….things were really bad for a few years and I almost threw the towel in several times. However, my mentor who is my business partner to this day, explained to me the cyclical nature of this work. I hadn’t yet seen a peak, so it would be easy to give up. But if I stuck around, I’d soon be at the top and then I’d have perspective. How true that advice proved to be….

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My life partner. She is without a doubt the most impressive human being I know. Loyal, honest, smart and funny. She is someone I aspire to be more like every day.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I truly cared.
That I was loving and caring.
That I always had an ear to lend and a shoulder to cry on.
