Story & Lesson Highlights with Lawrence Hearn of South Mountain

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lawrence Hearn. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Lawrence, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up at 4:30AM and go for a run.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, as well as an audio engineer. I have played for and worked with many great musicians/bands in various capacities since 1996. I was trained as a studio vocalist, session musician and producer personally by Les Scott who remains a close friend and mentor/business partner to this day. I am currently finishing up principle tracking for a few projects including ‘The Broadcast Royalties’ and ‘Lawrence Of Arizona’. Both of which will be officially launched upon my return to Arizona from several years in Oregon this Winter.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I didn’t belong because I was different from my peers. Time and experience has provided me the clarity and wisdom to see that sometimes, the things that set us apart from the crowd are our greatest assets and strengths.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Resilience and self reliance. What doesn’t kill us (etc). I am the product of my struggles and hardships. I welcome them now, because I know they only make me stronger and build themselves into the every evolving complexity of my character. My Mother used to say “Just remember, they can’t eat you.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Social media is a cancer on our society and everybody should stop using it entirely.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Art requires no audience. Some of the best and most personally satisfying things I’ve ever created in my life, I’ve yet to share with anybody else. Creating art with the express intention of other people liking or understanding makes for compromise, which in turn leads to bad art. It leads to products.
