Kayla Barnes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kayla, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is the foundation of any successful business. As a business owner, being honest and transparent is essential. Integrity builds trust, and trust is what connects you to your audience. Without it, your clients have no reason to believe in you, your brand, or your product.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Pretty Girls Bakery is a home based bakery in Tolleson, AZ that offers custom sweet treats all over the Valley. I use my culinary background to create gourmet treats with elevated flavors. Since my last magazine article in January, I’ve launched a website to reach even more of you, so things have been busy—but exciting!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandma, mom, and aunt showed me firsthand what hard work looks like—early mornings, late nights, and never making excuses. Watching them hustle taught me that dedication always pays off, and that nothing worth having comes easy.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell little me that we made it this far—there’s no turning back, we have to see it through. We never imagined we’d have our own bakery, let alone be featured in magazines for our sweet treats! Keep dreaming big, because it’s all unfolding just like it’s meant to.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie most bakeries tell themselves is that good products alone are enough to succeed. While quality matters, success also takes branding, consistency, marketing, and strong customer relationships—because even the best cupcake won’t sell if no one knows it exists.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Baking is what I’m meant to do—it’s been a part of me since childhood, from helping in the kitchen to watching baking shows on TV. Seeing someone’s eyes light up after tasting something I made is what drives me. I’m not just making sweet treats—I’m creating memories.
