Story & Lesson Highlights with Jesus Leyva of the greater phoenix area

Jesus Leyva shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jesus, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true joy would have to be during a recent photo critique, I was a part of where an artist I have become very close with was getting the recognition they deserved after doubting themselves for a long time. In that moment, I felt true joy that people could finally see what I saw in them, not only a great photographer but someone I know will make waves, Joanna Magalhaes is a serious artist to look out for you can see her work on Instagram @jomags.photo

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello everyone, my name is Jesus Leyva, a Latino photographer and owner of the streetwear brand AlienEgo. What makes my brand special and different from anything else? I use a mix of my photography with elements of digital design to add flair to each piece. I am inspired a lot by car culture and love incorporating that into my work; however, as I mature as a creative, I am searching for meaning behind the brand, on top of just making cool-looking clothing. During my sabbatical from the brand, I have been very inspired by brands such as Brown and Proud, as well as punk with a camera

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that shaped how I see myself would have to be my friends, or, as corny as it sounds, my family. I have a strong relationship with the people I have allowed into my life and consider them family more than anything. My friend group is always there for me whenever I need anything, as well as challenge me to be a better person every day, and do bigger and better things, not only as an artist but as a human being trying to represent other people who have been discriminated against.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me who is actually there for me when I am at my lowest and who just wants to join my success when times are easy. Many people like to say they have ride or dies in their life, but the people in my life have proven that time and time again. Like I’ve said, my family is a strong support in my life, and I truly feel like we can accomplish anything together.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I’ve never paid attention too closely to fads due to the fact that just as fast as they come, they also go just as fast. I tend to focus on the things I’m genuinely interested in and work with that. When looking for new projects, I often watch movies or listen to music to inspire me and give me ideas that not only inspire me but also excite me daily, or else things get kinda boring to me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope my art speaks for itself. I am very inspired by musicians like MF Doom and Daft Punk, where they want their work to be what people concentrate on, not on who they are or how they look, much less what they’re wearing or who they’re dating. I don’t care too much if people recognize me in the streets. I want my work to be what people recognize. I think that’s the greatest gift you can give an artist, recognition that their work is powerful.
