We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dominique Kirkpatrick. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose track of time when I’m in nature. Hiking, breathing in fresh air, or just standing barefoot on the ground—it helps me slow down, reset, and feel like myself again.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dominique, the creator behind Word Search Puzzles for Baddies. My brand flips the traditional idea of puzzle books on its head — instead of something dusty and dull, I’ve created bold, stylish word searches with themes that actually resonate with modern readers. Think cozy, spicy, sassy, and unapologetically fun. It’s about giving people a way to unwind, laugh, and maybe even see themselves in the puzzles.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child growing up in a tumultuous household, I believed I wasn’t worthy of happiness, love, or respect. Over time, I realized those beliefs weren’t true. I’ve learned that not only am I worthy, but that anything I want for my life is possible with intention and effort.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
In January 2021, I lost a daughter during a traumatic delivery. That experience shattered me and brought me to the lowest point in my life. It took years to work through the grief and depression, but what I gained is an unshakable appreciation for life and a self-love that could only come from surviving something so devastating.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the self-publishing world is that you can’t make money with puzzle books because the market is flooded. I see that sentiment all the time in Reddit groups and YouTube channels. The truth is, if you believe in your vision and create something unique, there’s always room for success. The energy and intention you put behind your work shows up in the results.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
My peace is at home with my family. It’s comfy, cozy, sometimes chaotic — but it’s full of love, and that makes it my sanctuary.
