Story & Lesson Highlights with Cara Kerouac & James Kerouac

Cara Kerouac & James Kerouac shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cara & James, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
We’re being called to embrace our role in the energetic, spiritual, and healing space—a space we were quietly dancing around, but never fully stepping into. In the early days of Kerouacs Cruising, we were intentional about remaining neutral. We avoided conversations that leaned too far into spirituality out of fear—fear of alienating listeners, of slowing our growth, of not being “mainstream” enough to be taken seriously.

But now, with the release of Together We Rise, something shifted. Sharing our story alongside other healers cracked us open. It reminded us that this is the work. The people we’re meant to reach—the ones who truly resonate with our message—aren’t looking for neutrality. They’re seeking connection, reflection, and raw truth. They’re craving reminders that they’re not alone on this awakening path.

This isn’t just about travel, or dogs, or off-grid living anymore. It’s about how all of those things are portals into healing. The desert winds, the quiet of the forest, the way our dogs fully embody the present moment—these are invitations into deeper alignment with ourselves and the universe.

So now we’re surrendering to it. Speaking more freely. Owning our intuition. Exploring the emotional and energetic aspects of our journey—without worrying if it’s “too much.” And honestly? It feels like home.

We’ve embraced our inner Dharma Bums—wandering not to escape, but to awaken.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re James and Cara, the heart and soul behind Kerouacs Cruising—a podcast, blog, and digital storytelling project rooted in freedom, self-discovery, and the road less traveled. We’ve spent the past few years journeying across the U.S. with our three beloved dogs, exploring remote places where we can all roam freely and reflect on life’s beauty, growth, and unexpected lessons.

Our project was born from a desire to break free from the pressure to live a performance-based life. After years of working in fast-paced, high-stress environments, we realized we wanted something more: a life built around joy, intention, and authenticity—not productivity. What started as a personal transformation evolved into a platform where we now connect with fellow dreamers, wanderers, and seekers looking to carve out a more meaningful path.

Through Kerouacs Cruising, we share practical travel tips, honest reflections, behind-the-scenes moments, and conversations that dive deep into healing, nature, self-worth, and the magic of presence. We’ve recently expanded our reach to YouTube. We are honored to be part of the international best-selling book “Together We Rise: The Wounded Healer’s Enlightened Journey to a Collective Ascension,” where we share our personal journey of rising from burnout and loss into purpose and aligned living.

What makes us different? We don’t just document the destination—we open up about the messy, magical, and sometimes painful process of getting there. Ours is a story about returning to your true self, one off-grid campsite, one campfire conversation, one hard-earned insight at a time.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Our fathers shaped us more than anyone else—though not in the ways they may have intended.

James and I both grew up under the weight of narcissistic father figures who molded us into versions of ourselves that better fit their vision, rather than honoring who we naturally were. For James, the response was rebellion. In high school, he left home and made it his mission to live as differently as possible from his father—rejecting the controlling, domineering traits he had witnessed firsthand. That resistance shaped his fiercely independent spirit and his desire to create a life where no one else dictated his path.

For me, it was different. I spent most of my life stuck in a trauma bond with my father, constantly seeking his validation, approval, and love. I couldn’t see the depth of that entanglement until after our car accident, when everything fell apart—and somehow, came together. That moment became a turning point in my healing, when I finally began to unravel the beliefs that had been silently shaping me all along.

What’s been most transformational, though, is what we’ve rebuilt together. Through years of raw honesty, grief, trial, and reparenting ourselves, James and I have consciously chosen who we want to be—free from the roles we were once forced into. We’ve stepped away from performing for love or trying to prove our worth. Instead, we lean into curiosity, compassion, and continuous growth.

It’s been a journey of unlearning and unbecoming, not just as individuals, but as a couple. And while our fathers may have taught us control, criticism, and fear—we’re rewriting that legacy into one of presence, purpose, and personal freedom.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
For both of us, the most profound shift has been in our beliefs—about spirituality, success, and what it means to live a meaningful life.

Not that long ago, I was a proud atheist. I believed science made the concept of God obsolete, and I saw religion as a tool used to control people. James wasn’t religious either—if anything, he leaned toward theories involving aliens manipulating humanity (and honestly, he still might be right!). But believing in something bigger? That felt like fantasy—something for people who didn’t want to take responsibility or needed comfort.

Then everything changed.

It started when I stumbled upon an energy masterclass by Jeffrey Allen. I felt something shift—physically, energetically—and it cracked the door open to a world I didn’t know existed. I became curious, but also cautious. I wanted to explore more, but I also didn’t want James to think I’d lost my mind.

Soon after, we came across a documentary about the CIA’s use of remote viewing, and we both bought the course. That led us down the rabbit hole of quantum physics, energy, manifestation, and the nature of consciousness. Suddenly, everything clicked. Books started showing up in our lives—E-Squared, The Astonishing Power of Emotions—and they affirmed what we were experiencing.

We wouldn’t call ourselves religious now either, but we are deeply spiritual. We’ve learned that we are the divine. That each of us has the power to shape our own reality—not through hustle and grind, but by healing our subconscious beliefs and aligning with who we truly are. Our relationship with life has changed. Our relationship with ourselves has changed.

That awakening also shifted our definition of success. We used to believe success meant working long hours, climbing ladders, getting promotions, and owning nice things. Now? Success is measured in joy. Peace. Freedom. Presence. The ability to be happy, even in the hard moments—that’s our new gold standard.

Changing our minds about these things didn’t come easy. It required letting go of everything we thought we knew. But on the other side of that surrender, we’ve found a life that feels more authentic, more aligned, and more ours than we ever imagined.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. What you see is what you get.

We may edit our podcast episodes to clean up the “ums,” “ahs,” and behind-the-scenes production chatter—but we never edit ourselves. From the beginning, we made a conscious decision to show up as our real, raw, imperfect selves. Because let’s face it—keeping up a persona sounds exhausting. It’s far easier (and more fulfilling) to just be honest.

Whether we’re sharing moments of joy or frustration, tears or laughter, what we bring to the podcast, the blog, and social media is us. The real us. The on-the-road-us. The healing-in-real-time-us. And while our storytelling might be intentional, our truth never gets filtered.

We believe people are craving authenticity—and when we show up as we are, we give others permission to do the same. That’s the kind of ripple we want to create in the world.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
We’d stop doubting ourselves.
We’d stop letting fear run the show.

If we knew our time was more limited, we’d stop obsessing over whether we’ll have the money for the next leg of the journey, the next truck repair, the next month of bills. The truth is, those fears have followed us on the road more than any map or GPS ever has. And while it’s natural to worry when the money dries up—especially after medical scares like James’s recent cancer treatment—we’ve learned that sometimes those pauses are sacred. They’re either telling us to slow down and heal… or reminding us to stop letting fear decide what comes next.

If we had only 10 years left, we wouldn’t waste another minute wondering how things will work out—we’d trust that they will. We’d double down on presence. On joy. On saying “yes” to the experiences that light us up, even if they don’t make sense on paper.

Because in the end, our legacy won’t be the money we made or the security we built. It’ll be the moments we fully lived—the sunsets we chased, the strangers we hugged, the episodes we recorded, even when we were still healing. That’s the energy we want to leave behind.
