We’re looking forward to introducing you to Britt Kidd. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Britt, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
If I could hire myself, I would. That’s been the hardest part of being an entrepreneur— not having enough hands or time in the day. If I had another me around, I would be unstoppable. It’s really hard to find good help these days. People aren’t trustworthy or care about things outside of themselves. If I could hire me, I know things would get handled in the best possible way. My website would be on point, my booth setup would be perfect, my social media content would have weekly posting with growing insights, and I would never have to worry about me being a no call/ no show.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an event planner, nonprofit founder, online smokeshop owner, and lowrider magazine editor. My brand focuses heavily on mental health awareness and women empowerment. I recently got involved with the Lowrider Community through LiveRide65 Podcast which also allowed me to start my own podcast- Vendor Vision. I interview local vendors and business owners either at my studio or at events they’re setup at to promote their products and services. I am a jack of all trades and don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mother taught me the most about work. She was very strict and a perfectionist. She first started having me clean our entire 3 bedroom house when I was just 7 years old. If I didn’t clean to her standard the first time, she would make me redo the entire task from beginning to end and stood there to watch to make sure I was doing things correctly. She also reminded me daily that I shouldn’t have to be told what to do, I should see what needs to be done regardless if it’s my responsibility or not, and do it. If the trash was full, take it out. If the dishes were clean, put them away. Although growing up it seemed unfair and harsh, it taught me to be thorough, take initiative, and do things right the first time. It also made me extremely helpful and resilient which I feel is important as a valued employee or entrepreneur.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I have struggled with giving up a lot in life personally and professionally, if I’m being honest. I have chronic depression and an adjustment disorder that I struggle with daily. Some days are better than others. However, I’m still here for one reason or another, so there has to be a bigger reason and plan for me to still be pushing through the hard times, so I’m hopeful one day I will find out what that reason is, so that I can appreciate the journey I had to achieve that overall goal.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe in the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matt. 7:12). However, after years of being taken advantage of, lied to, used until I had nothing left to give them or myself, I’m starting to feel jaded. However, unlike the people I have met in my life, my morals won’t allow me to betray and use someone at the level that people have to me. I just recognize patterns in people now that are red flags, so I cut them off before they can do more damage.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Even though being praised is my love language, it’s very rare that I involve people in my accomplishments in order for them to tell me I’m doing a good job. I know I’m doing a good job because I put my heart and soul into everything I touch, regardless if it’s for my business or for someone else.
