We’re looking forward to introducing you to Brian Lane. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Brian, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Thinking about life outside of work actually has been more work. But this is a different kind of work. It is a joy that fills a productive side of my life while being my passion. Earlier this I was let go from my software engineer position at Capital One, and I took this time to focus on my development skills. Coincidentally, this lead to me wanting to learn a programming language, ruby, and the framework it utilizes, Rails. Since then I’ve thankfully been hired elsewhere, and been deep in development with my Ruby on Rails project that can automatically create virtual storefronts for businesses.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Brian Lane and as software engineer I’ve built Bizblasts. With www.bizblasts.com you can sign up as a business to enable software to manage your bookings, payments, and website hosting. This has been a passion project of mine, every since I decided I wanted to be my own boss. Bizblasts allows the same thing for you whether you are an established business and looking to expand online or just getting started and don’t want to pay any of the big brands a monthly fee because you are unsure about how to start a business quite yet.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was younger I used to believe the best path in life was to going to school, do well in college, and get a job to live a great life. This is best path forward, this is safest path if you can obtain it. Even harder to obtain, is the real American dream in these modern times is starting a successful business. You don’t need to go to school, get a degree, or have job to start a business. Those attributes may set you up for successful for your business, but really anyone can start a business and create a successful business by working through the failures. Nothing will be more rewarding than a successful business, given it can provide more than any average job you could get in this life.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
Something important that I have changed my mind about was my business I was going to start before Bizblasts. I was feeling frustrated with the hiring process for software engineers and I wanted to build a company to work directly with recruiters and companies to interview with real work instead of asking tiny puzzles that don’t have to do with actual work at the company. I changed my mind on this when the complexity grew too much and I wanted to start simpler to help a wider audience.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Smart people don’t believe in Artificial Intelligence, and they are wrong. They try it with one use case for how they believe it could benefit them with little to no research how to use it correctly and this results in disappointment. Ai is extremely useful, just like how a google search can be powerful for knowledge building but it just depends how the technology is utilized. Right now, Bizblasts is a self service platform, but the plan moving forward is to become an ai first platform to automate the flows for businesses to help people who are not technical.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Artificial Intelligence represents the future, poised to revolutionize many aspects of our lives with an impact extending far beyond current applications. While AI is currently striving to be the most powerful technological tool ever created, its potential extends beyond mere tool usage. Consider aviation: the role of the flight engineer has diminished due to software automating flight planning. Although safety regulations prevent a single pilot from solely relying on software, even now, pilots are essentially overseeing autopilot systems. This trend, while not immediate, could accelerate in industries with less regulation. I foresee AI potentially replacing white-collar jobs, saving companies money but causing negative consequences. This is why I am so invested in Bizblasts, as businesses providing physical services are less vulnerable to automation.
