Story & Lesson Highlights with BG Boyd of Tucson

We recently had the chance to connect with BG Boyd and have shared our conversation below.

Hi BG, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Early this year a group reached out to me to provide drone coverage of protests here in Tucson. At first, I was hesitant to do this because I was worried about backlash. After carefully consideration, I ended up doing a few events. As I knew would happen, there was some backlash.

That gave me pause and I stopped doing it. But then a lot of people started to reach out and tell me how seeing these events from the perspective of the drone was so awesome and that they wanted me to keep doing it. So, I sucked it up and started doing it again despite the occasional backlash and personal attacks.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is BG Boyd, I am an aerial drone photographer/videographer based in Tucson, AZ. For the past 5 years I was the go to guy to document Tucson’s murals and created a database (tucsonazmuals.com) with over 500 murals now! I still do that but also provide aerial coverage for large Tucson events such as the Tucson Folk Festival, El Tour de Tucson, the Downtown 5k, and more!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There have been so many moments recently that have shaped the way I see the world, that there is no way I can pick one. I can only hope that some of the work I am doing will somehow affect change in the near future. Being able to capture events from a new perspective has shown me how powerful and inspiring it can be when a community comes together.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
The other day I was going to DoorDash Tuxon Chix (amazing chicken wings and sandwiches) but changed my mind to get Brother’s Noodles instead.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Maybe a tad more tame but, yes, pretty much. I generally try to “be real” and I’d like to think that most of the people I interact with appreciate that. I do know that some people have unfollowed me on social media because they do not have the same values, but that’s ok, I do the same.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I have been fortunate enough to pretty much make my own path and I am mostly doing what I desire. I’ve wanted to work with computers from a very early age, so my day job as a computer programmer is great. Outside of work, I am also doing what I want to, flying drones and taking photographs.
