Andrew Trego shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Andrew, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
There’s no such thing as a “normal” day in this business, but I’ll give you the rundown.
If it’s wedding season, I’m either prepping for a wedding, doing a wedding, or recovering from a wedding.
Non-wedding days start with coffee and checking in on my couples — answering timeline questions, reviewing playlists, making sure everyone’s feeling good about their big day.
I spend a lot of time in my home office working on music curation, updating equipment, and honestly, a ridiculous amount of time on logistics. People think DJing is just about music, but I’m over here creating backup plans for backup plans.
Then there’s family time with Jessi and the girls, which is the best part of any day. My daughters keep me grounded and remind me what actually matters.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey there! I’m Andrew Trego, but everyone calls me Trego. I’m a wedding DJ and MC here in Arizona, and honestly, I like to think of myself as if your cousin Vinny were a world-class wedding DJ.
Here’s the thing — I didn’t start out planning to be in the wedding industry. I was this theater kid who got swept up by Disney Cruise Line right after college, flying through the air as Peter Pan. Met my wife Jessi there, and we thought we’d conquer Hollywood. But auditioning culture? Not for me. I wrote in a notebook in 2014: Should I host events for money? and somehow that random thought turned into TREGOtheDJ.
What makes my dancefloor different? We start classy and end sweaty. Your grandparents are tapping their feet to Sinatra during dinner, and by midnight, your college friends are out on the dancefloor with their clothes ripped off, sweaty from head to toe and somebody is certainly not going to have a voice tomorrow.
We’re not just playing music — we’re facilitating human connection. I get to understand couples’ backgrounds, their fears, their dreams, and then throw it all together like cooking with Paula Deen. Add some butter, and it’s going to be amazing.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that needs to prove I’m the best DJ in Arizona.
For years, I was so focused on being better than everyone else, comparing myself to other DJs, trying to win some imaginary competition. That drive helped me get better at my craft, but it also created unnecessary stress and took energy away from what really matters.
Now I know that there’s room for everyone to succeed, and my job isn’t to be better than other DJs — it’s to be the right fit for my couples. That competitive mindset served me when I was building my skills, but now it’s just getting in the way of focusing on service and genuine connection.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Dude, stop trying so hard to fit into everyone else’s definition of success. That weird combination of Theater kid energy, obsessive preparation, and genuine care for people? That’s not a bug, that’s a feature. You’re going to find a way to use all of it, and it’s going to be better than anything you’re imagining right now.
I’d also tell him, The path that looks like failure is actually leading you exactly where you need to go. Trust the process, even when it doesn’t make sense.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Pretty much, yeah. What you see on social media and at weddings is genuinely who I am — maybe just the most caffeinated version of myself. I’m naturally high-energy, I genuinely care about making people happy, and I really do think about this stuff as much as it seems like I do.
The only difference is that publicly I try to keep the focus on couples and the celebration, so people don’t see as much of the behind-the-scenes stress or the family challenges we’re dealing with. But the enthusiasm, the dad jokes, the obsession with creating perfect moments — that’s all real. I couldn’t fake that level of energy for 10 years.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Trego made our wedding feel like one of the coolest nights of our lives, but more than that, he made us feel like family. I want couples to remember that I wasn’t just their vendor — I was someone who genuinely cared about their story and showed up as a true partner.
I hope they tell stories about how I helped create those perfect moments where all generations were dancing together, or how I saved the day when something went wrong, or how I made their shy uncle feel comfortable enough to get on the dance floor. I want to be remembered as someone who elevated the entire wedding experience, not just the music.
