Sky Black shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Sky , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Every single day when I look at my wife and kids.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an Artist mainly specializing in fine art and murals. My work is thought provoking with a painterly and technical approach. Almost all of my paintings are based around some type of light source or fascinating concept and then they are built from there. Painting the same looking art over and over again like the majority or artists will never be my style. I don’t generally limit myself to any specific imagery, instead, I create art about anything that is interesting. I’ve been professionally painting for 16 years now and was born Flagstaff AZ in 1992.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My parents always believed in me and told me I could achieve anything in life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, being an artist is extremely challenging but I always knew I could work and solve my way out. I feel like most of my job is problem solving which turns out to be synonymous with creativity so it works out.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That a banana taped to a wall is art. Subjectivity, combined with self centered egoism has steered some of the art world into a nonsense spiral where objectively well executed fine art are vague concepts. This is not the only industry suffering from this problem either in my opinion.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes, I love the challenge and the idea that anything could happen on any given painting day. It’s cliche but a blank canvas does represent an infinite amount of possibilities. It’s a true honor to be able to hone a craft over time.
