Rising Stars: Meet Jennifer Johnson of Phoenix / Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Johnson.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Jennifer Johnson, the founder and makeup artist behind Jeislay Makeup Artist, a beauty brand based in Arizona. I was born in California but raised in Arizona, and this community has always been home for me. I’m also a proud mom of four, so entrepreneurship has never been just about building a career for myself—it has been about creating something that gives me the freedom to provide for my family while also showing my children what it looks like to pursue your dreams.

My journey into makeup began long before I ever imagined it could become a business. I’ve always loved beauty, creativity, and the way makeup can transform not only how someone looks, but how they feel about themselves. In 2018, I decided to take that passion seriously and begin building my career as a professional makeup artist.

What started as a passion gradually became a business. I began taking clients, building my skills, learning the business side of being an entrepreneur, and figuring out what it meant to create a brand that felt authentic to me. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many different women and help them feel beautiful for some of the most important moments in their lives—from weddings and special events to photoshoots and everything in between.

One of the things I love most about being a makeup artist is that I’m not simply applying makeup. I’m creating an experience. I get to meet women during moments when they may be nervous, excited, emotional, or stepping into a new chapter of their lives, and I get to be a small part of helping them feel confident. That connection with my clients is one of the biggest reasons I’ve continued to grow in this industry.

Today, Jeislay Makeup Artistry has evolved into much more than a makeup service. I’m continuing to grow my clientele and expand my beauty brand while also stepping into the world of content creation. I’m passionate about sharing beauty tips, makeup techniques, products I genuinely love, behind-the-scenes moments, and the realities of building a business. I want my content to feel relatable and authentic while still inspiring women to invest in themselves and embrace their own beauty.

I’m also excited about education. After years of working as a makeup artist, I wanted to create opportunities for other women who want to improve their skills and learn the techniques behind the looks they see online. That passion has led me to begin hosting hands-on makeup education, including my Soft Glam Masterclass, where I can teach what I’ve learned throughout my journey in a more personal and interactive way.

I’m currently in a season of intentionally building the next level of my business. My goal isn’t simply to have a successful makeup business—I want to build a recognizable beauty brand, grow a strong community, create meaningful content, work with beauty brands, and ultimately build a career that allows me to have creative freedom and financial independence.

Looking back at where I started in 2018, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve learned that entrepreneurship isn’t always a straight line. There have been seasons where I questioned myself, struggled with consistency, or wondered if I was capable of turning my passion into something bigger. But every season has taught me something and pushed me to become a better artist, businesswoman, and person.

Now, I’m choosing to bet on myself. I’m still growing, still learning, and still figuring things out—but I’m no longer just dreaming about the business I want to build. I’m actively building it. And I’m excited about what the next chapter of Jeislay Makeup Artistry will look like.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been both. There have been moments where things have felt exciting and rewarding, and other seasons where I’ve struggled with consistency, finances, self-doubt, and simply trying to balance entrepreneurship with being a mom of four. Building a business from the ground up hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has taught me something and pushed me to grow. I’ve learned that the journey doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful, and I’m proud that I’ve continued to show up and keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional makeup artist specializing in soft glam, full glam, and bridal makeup. I’m known for creating polished, flawless looks while still making my clients feel like themselves. I’ve always believed makeup should enhance someone’s natural beauty rather than hide it.

What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with my clients over the years. Some of my favorite moments are when a client starts off nervous or unsure and leaves feeling confident and beautiful. I’m also proud of how I’ve continued to evolve—from simply providing makeup services to building a beauty brand, creating content, and teaching other women through hands-on education.

I think what sets me apart is the experience I create. I’m very intentional about making my clients feel comfortable, heard, and confident. I bring both the artistry and the personal connection, and I genuinely care about the women sitting in my chair. I’m not just trying to create a beautiful makeup look—I want my clients to leave feeling beautiful from the inside out.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system throughout my journey. My family has played a huge role in encouraging me to keep going, especially during the seasons when building a business felt challenging. As a mom, having people who understand the time, dedication, and sacrifices that come with entrepreneurship has meant so much to me.

My partner, Derek, has also been a source of support and encouragement throughout my journey. Having someone who believes in what I’m building and encourages me to continue pursuing my goals has made a difference.

I’m also incredibly grateful for the other makeup artists and beauty professionals in the industry. There are so many talented artists who have inspired me, taught me through their work, and shown me what is possible within the beauty industry. I’ve learned a lot simply by watching, connecting with, and being inspired by other artists.

And, of course, my clients deserve so much credit. Every person who has booked with me, trusted me with their face for an important occasion, referred me to someone else, or supported my content has helped me build this business. Their trust and continued support are a huge part of why I’m still here and continuing to grow.
