Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Johnston.
Hi Sarah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been into healthy living and wellness from being a dancer aged 3-18 and participating in school sports. I continued this passion for health and fitness throughout my post-college years by becoming a runner, spinner, and yogi, and trying any new workouts that felt fun.
I have run 2 marathons and 5 half marathons, got my 200-hour yoga teacher training certification, NASM personal training certification, IIN health coaching certification, and become a fitness teacher in the Chicago fitness scene. I have now translated that to life in Phoenix. I have always been interested in the fitness aspect of health and wellness. but have focused on more than that in the past 5 years. I believe mental health, physical health, our bodies, and our minds are all connected.
I have evolved from just a fitness mindset to a bio-individual and holistic wellness approach. I love working with clients in a group setting and on a 1:1 basis. I look at each person as an individual as we are all unique and require different things to feel our best. I have been working as a health coach and fitness teacher for the past 3 years and adore incorporating all aspects of health into my practice.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say it has been an evolving road, which comes with challenges and success. The health and wellness industry is always changing, which can be hard to keep up with. I had to work hard to complete my certifications alongside a full-time career and family life. I believe being certified is important, so I prioritized this, but it was a lot of work.
Finding my path in fitness was also a journey in itself. I had to audition at many places, faced rejections from studios, had to find my style, and establish myself as a credible teacher. I believe it all ended up exactly as it should have, but it did not come without hard work and persistence.
I also just became a new mom in June to a sweet little boy! Balancing motherhood has now thrown a lot more into the mix but I would not change a thing. Pregnancy and motherhood have added a new layer to how I view wellness and health.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work full-time in data and tech solutions for brands and their marketing endeavors. I love it! It is a super fast-paced and interesting industry. It keeps me on my toes. My side passion is all things health coaching and fitness. I run my health coaching practice, teach fitness classes, and also run a blog and social channels.
I specialize in tailored wellness approaches and look at my clients as individual people. I incorporate the whole spectrum of what makes up true health. This includes things like fitness, mental health, time management, goal setting, gratitude practices, sustainable routines, and commitment to health long term. I have an approach that encourages people to make health a lifelong endeavor, not just a “quick fix”.
What sets me apart is my commitment to making health and fitness fun, achievable, manageable, and sustainable. I believe in being radically transparent and breaking stigmas around wellness and health.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as finding a path that works for you and being bold in making choices that align with you. I think success is finding ways to feel empowered to be sustainable. Achievable.
But also challenge yourself at the same time. I think success is finding true personal alignment, not just following the masses. Success will NOT look the same every day, and that is okay! Success is the long-term picture.
